5 Little Monsters: Free Crochet Pattern- Anchor Baby Hats

Free Crochet Pattern- Anchor Baby Hats

I made up a couple of baby hats the other day that I thought I would share. I was trying to think of something a little more boyish, sometimes is seems harder to make cute baby boy stuff than it is to make cute stuff for little girls. Flowers and bows are great for girls but what do you do for a little boy. I have made sports hats (footballs, basketballs, football helmets, etc.) and some little animals like bears or owls, but I wanted something different this time. These little nautical style hats with anchors on them are what I came up with.

When I thought of the idea I knew that I wanted stripes and I wanted navy blue, red and white with maybe a little gray or gold. I played around a little with the width of the stripes and the edge of the hat.

The blue and white hat was the first one that I made. I made up the pattern for that one as I went. It is a newborn size. It was also the first anchor that I made and I was not happy with the way it turned out. The bottom part seemed too long so I changed it slightly on the second one and was much happier with the result.

You can see the difference between the anchors in the pictures above. Because I was happier with the look of the gray anchor on the red and white hat I will share the pattern for that one. I will also share the pattern for the blue and white hat since that one I came up with myself. The red and white one is just a double crochet baby beanie changing the color every row and finished off with a single crochet border. The pattern I followed was a 3-6 month size but I must have crocheted it looser than I normally do because it turned out big, probably more of a 6-12 month size.

Anyway, on to the pattern-

Blue & White Striped Baby Hat
Newborn size

You will need:

worsted weight yarn in white and navy (and red for the anchor but that pattern will be separate)
H crochet hook
yarn needle

*I don't count my starting chain as a dc
*You will be changing colors every other row so I just carry the color up inside of the hat, you can see that in one of the pictures above
*When changing colors I always change in the last stitch of the row before. Start your stitch as you normally would but the last time you yarn over change to your new color, then pull through with the new color and slip stitch to join your round.

Round 1- starting with white make a magic ring ch 2, 11dc in ring, change to navy, ss in first dc to
                join   (11 dc)
Round 2- ch1, 2 sc in each stitch, change to white, ss to first sc  (22 sc)
Round 3- ch 2, (1 dc in next stitch, 2 dc in next stitch) 11 times, change to navy, ss to first dc  (33 dc)
Round 4- ch1, (sc in next 2 stitches, 2 sc in next stitch) 11 times, change to white, ss to first sc (44 sc)
Round 5- ch2, dc around, change to navy, ss to first dc  (44 dc)
Round 6- ch 1, sc around, change to white, ss to first sc (44 sc)
Round 7-10- repeat rounds 5 and 6 two more times each (44 stitches)
Round 11- with white yarn ch 1, sc around, do not switch colors at the end of this row, the rest of the
hat will be worked in white, join  (44 sc)
Round 12- ch 2, (fpdc around next sc, bpdc around next sc) around, join (22 fpdc, 22bpdc)
Round 13- ch 1, (fpsc around next stitch, bpsc around next stitch) around (22 fpsc, 22 bpsc)
                 Finish off, weave in ends.

 Now for the anchor:

 Crochet Anchor Applique

H hook
worsted weight yarn

ch 12
sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in the next 4 ch
ch 8, sc in the 2nd ch from hook, sc in next ch
ch 7, sc in 6th ch from the hook, sc in next ch
ch 3, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next ch
sc in next 5 ch
sk 1 chain, sc in last 5 ch
finish off but leave long piece of yarn for sewing

You will have to shape it as you sew it on so that it looks the way that you want. Also there will be a couple of gaps that can be kind of filled in as it is sewn on, on the bottom where the center connects and between the two parts of the little crossbar part.

If you have any questions feel free to ask me in the comments, I will try to clarify whatever I can. Thanks and enjoy.

  3. I have been searching for awhile now for a quick and easy, small anchor pattern. This one is perfect. I used a size G hook and Hobby Lobby's I Love This Cotton yarn to make anchors about 5in long. They are the perfect size for the sailor hats I made my cousin's twin baby boys. Thank you!

  4. Lovely hats! I agree with you that making cute baby stuff for a baby boy is a little tough than that of making for a baby girl. One thing you did well by providing the detail procedure of making such hats. Though I don't have any idea how women make these complicated things but those who knows how to make them would surely find it helpful for them.
