I know Valentine's Day is coming up soon but last week I made these quick crocheted puffy hearts. I had been wanting to try it for a while but I was a little nervous about trying to get the shape right. I don't know if these are the most perfect crocheted hearts ever but I was pretty happy with the way they turned out.
I made three different hearts and each one is a different size but they are all made using the exact same pattern. The only thing that I changed was the type of yarn and the size of hook I used. The largest one, the lightest pink, was made with bulky weight yarn and an I hook. The yarn was some that I have had for a long time and the label was gone, I think it was a Lion Brand yarn but I'm not sure which one.
The medium size heart was made with Red Heart With Love in Bubblegum using a G hook. The smallest, brightest pink heart was made with Caron Simply Soft in Watermelon and an F hook. Just using a slightly different weight of yarn and hook really made a difference in the size of the heart.
The hearts are crocheted in the round amigurumi style from the bottom up. When you get to the two bumps at the top you make one and finish that up, cut the yarn, attach it on the other side and work the second side.
How To Make Crocheted Puffy Hearts
You will need:
- yarn (samples made with an unknown bulky weight yarn, Red Heart With Love- Bubblegum, or Caron Simply Soft- Watermelon)
- a hook that is a little smaller than you would normally use for that yarn so that the stitches are tight (samples used I for the largest, G for the medium, and F for the smallest)
- Poly-Fil fiberfill
- yarn needle
Begin with a magic ring
Round 1: in magic ring ch1, 4 sc (4 sc)
Round 2: [2 sc in first stitch, 1 sc in next] repeat (6 sc)
Round 3: [2 sc in first stitch, 1 sc in next] 3 times (9 sc)
Round 4: [2 sc in first stitch, 1 sc in next 2] 3 times (12 sc)
Round 5: [2 sc in first stitch, 1 sc in next 3] 3 times (15 sc)
Round 6: [2 sc in first stitch, 1 sc in next 4] 3 times (18 sc)
Round 7: [2 sc in first stitch, 1 sc in next 5] 3 times (21 sc)
Round 8: [2 sc in first stitch, 1 sc in next 6] 3 times (24 sc)
Round 9: [2 sc in first stitch, 1 sc in next 7] 3 times (27 sc)
Round 10: [2 sc in first stitch, 1 sc in next 8] 3 times (30 sc)
Round 11: [2 sc in first stitch, 1 sc in next 9] 3 times (33 sc)
Round 12: [2 sc in first stitch, 1 sc in next 10] 3 times (36 sc)
Round 13: [2 sc in first stitch, 1 sc in next 11] 3 times (39 sc)
Round 14: [2 sc in first stitch, 1 sc in next 12] 3 times (42 sc)
This is where you will start working separately on the two bumps at the top of the heart, first one side then the other, you will only be working with half of the stitches at a time
Round 15: 1 sc in next 21 stitches (21 sc)
Round 16: skip the next 21 stitches and begin working in the first stitch from row 15, 1 sc in each stitch (21 sc)
Round 17: [sc2tog, 1 sc in next 5 stitches] 3 times (18 sc)
Round 18: [sc2tog, 1 sc in next stitch] 6 times (12 sc)
Round 19: sc2tog 6 times (6 sc)
Cut yarn, weave through the last round and tighten to close, weave in end.
Stuff the point and one side of the heart, continue stuffing as you work the other side
Holding the heart so that the finished side is on the right, if you are crocheting right handed, attach the yarn to the hook with a slip knot and begin working in the first unworked stitch at the center
Round 20: 1 sc in each stitch around, slip stitch into the bottom center of the finished bump, this will help close the center between the two bumps, if you don't do anything you will end up with a gap in between (21 sc)
Round 21: 1 sc in each sc from round 20, skip the slip stitch (21 sc)
Round 22: [sc2tog, 1 sc in next 5 stitches] 3 times (18 sc)
Finish stuffing your heart at this point
Round 23: [sc2tog, 1 sc in next stitch] 6 times (12 sc)
Round 24: sc2tog 6 times (6 sc)
Finish off the same way as the first side
