5 Little Monsters: Hogwarts House Scarves Blanket

Hogwarts House Scarves Blanket

Last year I participated in the Happy Harry Potter series that Rae Gun Ramblings does each July around Harry's birthday and I decided to join in the fun again this year. Last year I made crocheted bookmarks that looked like the house scarves from Hogwarts. This year I decided to do another Hogwarts house scarves project but this time I made a blanket. Perfect for snuggling up under to read a Harry Potter book or watch one of the movies. It is basically 4 giant scarves, one in each of the house colors, sewn together to make a blanket.

My blanket turned out a little over 50" square. I would have preferred it to be a little longer, more rectangular instead of a square, but I was running out of yarn so I stopped. You could easily make it longer, you would just need more than one skein of the main colors. Each "scarf" is made separately and then they are sewn together to make the blanket. I made it so that the stripes were slightly offset so that there wasn't just a line of strips all the way across the blanket. The stripes did mean a lot of ends to weave in which is one of my least favorite parts of crocheting, but I got it done and in the end it really wasn't that bad.

I used a combination of Red Heart Super Saver and Red Heart With Love to make my blanket. I was trying to find all one kind of yarn to use but I wasn't able to find a yellow I liked in Super Saver, they were either a little brighter than I wanted or too light. I found a good yellow in With Love so I went with that. I also used With Love for the Gray, I wanted to find a lighter gray but couldn't find anything in stores so I ended up using With Love in Pewter. The blanket is made entirely of double crochet so it is actually a really easy blanket to make. All you have to do is change colors occasionally and then weave in the ends and sew the strips together. It might be a little bit big for a brand new beginner, I would probably recommend starting with a smaller project, but you definitely don't need to be an advanced crocheter to be able to make it.

How to Crochet a Hogwart's House Scarf Blanket

Finished Size about 52" square

You will need:

  • 1 large skein worsted weight yarn in each of the following colors: red, gold, blue, gray, yellow, black, green
    • Red Heart Super Saver Burgundy
    • Red Heart Super Saver Gold
    • Red Heart Super Saver Soft Navy
    • Red Heart With Love Pewter
    • Red Heart With Love Daffodil
    • Red Heart Super Saver Black
    • Red Heart Super Saver Hunter Green
  • I crochet hook
  • yarn needle
  • scissors

Instructions:

You will be making 4 strips/scarves individually and then sewing them together. In order to make it so the the stripes were offset there are two different patterns, the first and third (Gryffindor and Hufflepuff) are made exactly the same, and the second and fourth (Ravenclaw and Slytherin) are made the same.

You can ch 3 for the starting dc of each row but I felt like it made to big of a gap on each row so I used the chainless starting dc instead, I used this tutorial to make it.

Scarf 1 and 3

Make one scarf with red as the main color (MC) and gold as the contrasting color (CC)
Make the other scarf with yellow as the MC and black as the CC

Begin with MC and I hook

ch 38
Row 1: dc in 4th ch from the hook and each ch to the end (36 dc, beginning ch 3 counts as a dc)
Row 2: turn, ch 3 or work starting dc, dc in each stitch to the end (36 dc)
Rows 3-5: repeat row 2
change to CC
Row 6: repeat row 2
change to MC
Row 7: repeat row 2
change to CC
Row 8: repeat row 2
change to MC
Rows 9-14: repeat row 2
change to CC

Repeat rows 6-14 seven more times, for a total of 77 rows, you should have 8 sections of CC stripes, if you want to make a longer blanket you can continue the pattern until you reach desired length

Rows 78-79: Continue with MC, repeat row 2

Finish off, weave in all ends

Scarf 2 and 4

Make one scarf with blue as MC and grey as the CC
Make the other scarf with green as the MC and gray as the CC

Begin with MC and I hook

ch 38
Row 1: dc in 4th ch from the hook and each ch to the end (36 dc, beginning ch 3 counts as a dc)
Row 2: turn, ch 3 or work starting dc, dc in each stitch to the end (36 dc)
Rows 3-8: repeat row 2
change to CC
Row 9: repeat row 2
change to MC
Row 10: repeat row 2
change to CC
Row 11: repeat row 2
change to MC
Rows 12-17: repeat row 2
change to CC

Repeat rows 9-17 six more times, for a total of 71 rows, you should have 7 sections of CC stripes

Row 72: with CC, repeat row 2
change to MC
Row 73: repeat row 2
change to CC
Row 74: repeat row 2
change to MC
Rows 75-79: repeat row 2

Finish off, weave in all ends

Assembly

Sew the strips together in order so that the stripes are offset. As you sew match up each row of dc. I stitched through the sides of the stitches to make an invisible seam. This mattress stitch joining tutorial is similar to how I seamed my strips and may help you out. Once you are finished sewing all of the strips together your blanket is done. I chose not to do any kind of a border because I wanted it just to be like the scarves sewn together but you could add a border if you would like. Another thing I considered was adding a fringe like the fringe on a scarf on each end, changing the colors to match each scarf. I decided against it because, honestly, I'm not a huge fan of fringe on blankets. I just decided to keep it simple and leave it alone.

I have actually had this post scheduled for a little while because I knew we would be having our new baby around the same time that this post was supposed to go up but I thought I would pop in really fast to add a picture of our new little guy in his Harry Potter outfit, I figured it would fit well with today's post so here he is, our newest little monster...
