crocheted ghost candy bowl for family movie night

Halloween is such a fun time to have family movie nights, there are so many fun movies that you can watch together and when you do it is always nice to have some treats to eat. I thought it would be fun to make a Halloween themed bowl that you could use for treats while you watch a movie and it can double as a candy bowl for trick-or-treaters later. I decided to make a ghost bowl since ghosts are pretty classic for Halloween and with the new Ghostbusters movie coming out on Blu-ray, DVD and 4K Ultra HD yesterday, that would be a fun option for your family movie night and a ghost bowl would go along with it perfectly. The extended version even has an extra 15 minutes not seen in theaters as well as more than 3 hours of hilarious extras.

I think family movie nights are a fun way to positively use technology with your family. Technology is such a tricky thing with families. When I was a kid it seemed like that was so much easier. Then you had a home phone and you watched whatever was on tv or a movie. As far as using the internet, we didn't have that at home until just before I graduated from high school and it was super slow dial-up and you had a limited number of minutes so you only used it when you absolutely needed it. So much has changed since then and now with kids of my own I find myself trying to figure out how to deal with those changes in my family. At what age do I give my kids access to a phone? At what age do we give them their own phone? What about smartphones vs. other phones? Computers? Tablets? The list goes on. So many decisions to make.I think it is important for my kids to have access to the internet because there is plenty of good on there and so much for them to learn but it is also a scary thing because there is a lot of bad as well. We do our best to combat some of the bad by using filters and things like that. I think for me one of the trickier questions is the phone question. Up until now it hasn't really been an issue but our kids are getting old enough that there are occasions where I wish they had access to a phone. I'm not ready for any of them to have their own phones but now that we no longer have a home phone one option that I have considered is getting a family phone. A phone that can be shared between all of them depending on who needs it at the time, kind of taking place of the home phone but that can also be taken places. Because it was something I was thinking of just trying out I thought a month to month plan would be a good place to start. We decided to look into Walmart Family Mobile as a month to month option that might work for us. With their PLUS Plan you get unlimited talk, text, and data, including up to 10GB of 4G LTE plus a free new release movie on VUDU ($7 value) every month for $49.88. That means plenty of high speed data for streaming movies (my kids favorite) or playing games. They also have other plans available where you still get unlimited everything but less 4G LTE. Their plans are postpaid plans so the only out of pocket expense you have besides the phone that you choose is the $19.88 for the Nano Starter
kit. We decided to go ahead and try it out so we bought the LG Stylo 2 Plus for $199. They had other phones for less so there are plenty of other phones to choose from but we like some of the features on that phone. Also when you activate a new line this month you will receive a code for a free download of the Ghostbusters VR Experience that will give you the experience of shooting a proton pack and looking a ghost in the eyes. All you have to do is go to a demo or purchase a phone to get the code, visit GhostbustersVR.com, register and redeem your code, then download the app and play.  They also have into events going on this month to help you get everything all set up.

Now back to our family movie night. I made a little treat bowl out of 2 strands of white yarn held together to help make it a little sturdier. Once I had the bowl the size that I wanted I added a black edge around the top. I waned to do something interesting so I did a spike stitch around the top edge. Then I added a little ghost face to one side. After that all that was left to do was fill it up with some candy and get ready to watch a movie.

How to Make a Crocheted Ghost Treat Bowl

You will need:

  • white and black worsted weight yarn (I used Red Heart Super Saver)
  • I crochet hook
  • scissors
  • yarn needle
Because this is worked holding 2 strands of yarn together you have two options. You can either use two skeins of yarn so you can pull from each skein or you can do what I did and pull from the center for one and the outside of another so that you can get both strands from only one skein.

Start with white yarn holding 2 strands together and beginning with a magic ring.

Round 1: in mr ch 1, 6 sc (6 sc)
Round 2: 2 sc in each stitch (12 sc)
Round 3: [2 sc in first stitch, 1 sc in next] repeat around (18 sc)
Round 4: [2 sc in first stitch, 1 sc in next 2 stitches] repeat around (24 sc)
Round 5: [2 sc in first stitch, 1 sc in next 3 stitches] repeat around (30 sc)
Round 6: [2 sc in first stitch, 1 sc in next 4 stitches] repeat around (36 sc)
Round 7: [2 sc in first stitch, 1 sc in next 5 stitches] repeat around (42 sc)
Round 8: [2 sc in first stitch, 1 sc in next 6 stitches] repeat around (48 sc)
Round 9: [2 sc in first stitch, 1 sc in next 7 stitches] repeat around (54 sc)
Round 10: [2 sc in first stitch, 1 sc in next 8 stitches] repeat around, join to first sc (60 sc)
Round 11: [2 sc in first stitch, 1 sc in next 9 stitches] repeat around (66 sc)
Round 12: [2 sc in first stitch, 1 sc in next 10 stitches] repeat around, join to first sc (72 sc)
Rounds 13-24: 1 sc in each stitch (72 sc)
Finish off white yarn and cut
Attach black yarn (still using 2 strands) in any stitch along the top
Border row: [sc in first stitch, sc 1 row below next stitch, sc 2 rows below next stitch, sc 1 row below next stitch] repeat around, join to first sc, finish off, cut yarn, weave in ends

Next you will make 2 eyes and a mouth, these are made with only one strand of yarn

Make 2 eyes:

in mr, ch 1, 8 sc, join to first sc, cut yarn leaving long end for sewing

Make mouth: ch 4, in second ch from hook 1 sc, 1 sc in next ch, 3 sc in next ch, turn your work and continue working along the other side of the ch, 1 sc in next ch, 2 sc in last ch, slip stitch to first sc, cut yarn leaving long end for sewing

Sew eyes and mouth to the front of your bowl.

Then fill it up with candy and treats and sit down for a fun movie night with the family, or use it to hand out treats on Halloween.

  1. Straight Talk is a much better plan. Unlimited Talk Text and Web. Only 5 gb but it is only $45 a month. Been with them nearly 6 years and it was the company we went with for my now 19 year old 7 years ago. She sends nearly 3000 texts a month ( she used to). You hook it up to the wifi when you are home and that cuts the usage down too.
