5 Little Monsters: Solid Granny Square Dishcloth with Crab Stitch Edging

Solid Granny Square Dishcloth with Crab Stitch Edging

I was recently asked to make a video showing how to do the crab stitch or reverse single crochet and rather than just making a sample piece that would never get used for anything I decided that I would make a dishcloth and finish it with the crab stitch edging. Once I made it I figured I might as well post the pattern here. It is a very simple pattern, I started with a solid granny sqaure and edged it with the crab stitch. If you aren't sure how to do the crab stitch, also known as reverse single crochet you can watch my video explaining how to do it.

How to Crochet a Solid Granny Square Dishcloth with Crab Stitch Edging

You will need:

  • medium cotton yarn in one or two colors (I used Peaches & Cream in Aqua and Ocean Coral)
  • H crochet hook
  • scissors
  • yarn needle

Instructions:

ch 4 and join with sl st to form a ring

Round 1: ch 5 (counts as first dc and ch 2), [3 dc in ring, ch 2] 3 times, 2 dc in ring, join with sl st to 3rd ch in beginning ch

Round 2: sl st into ch 2 space, ch 5, 2 dc in ch space, [dc in next 3 stitches, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in ch space] 3 times, dc in next 3 stitches, dc in same ch space you started in, sl st to 3rd ch to join

Round 3:  sl st into ch 2 space, ch 5, 2 dc in ch space, [dc in next 7 stitches, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in ch space] 3 times, dc in next 7 stitches, dc in same ch space you started in, sl st to 3rd ch to join

Round 4: sl st into ch 2 space, ch 5, 2 dc in ch space, [dc in next 11 stitches, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in ch space] 3 times, dc in next 11 stitches, dc in same ch space you started in, sl st to 3rd ch to join

Round 5: sl st into ch 2 space, ch 5, 2 dc in ch space, [dc in next 15 stitches, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in ch space] 3 times, dc in next 15 stitches, dc in same ch space you started in, sl st to 3rd ch to join

Round 6: sl st into ch 2 space, ch 5, 2 dc in ch space, [dc in next 19 stitches, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in ch space] 3 times, dc in next 19 stitches, dc in same ch space you started in, sl st to 3rd ch to join

This is as large as I made my square, you can continue following the same pattern of increases until you reach the size you want, then if you are working the edging in a contrasting color you will need to change colors at this point

Edging: with new color (if you decided to change colors) work reverse single crochet around the entire square, working 2 stitches in each corner.

Finish off and weave in ends
