One of my favorite movies as a kid was Miracle on 34th Street. I grew up watching the older version and then the new one came out when I was about 12 so as a teenager I watched both. I like both versions and it is hard for me to choose which one is my favorite. When I was younger I think the older version was my favorite just because we watched it every year, I liked the new one too but the old one was tradition. Then I had kids and now the newer version is a favorite in our house. In both movies Susan, the little girl, sees Santa talk to another little girl in another language. In the older version the little girl is from Holland and he speaks to her in Dutch, in the newer version the little girl is deaf and he signs to her. Having 3 deaf children who use ASL you can understand why that part has special meaning to me and my family. It is a pretty awesome thing when someone can sign to my kids and make a situation like talking to Santa the same for them as it is for other kids and the movie always makes me think of that.

We don't put a huge focus on Santa in our family, my kids know he isn't real, but we still think of him as a fun part of Christmas. I was trying to think of what I could make to represent the movie Miracle on 34th Street and I knew it had to be something with Santa since believing in Santa is the whole point of the movie. I thought of the line where Susan says, "I believe, I believe, it's silly but I believe" and I decided to base my project on that.

I painted a wooden board red and added the words "I Believe" along with a black belt and gold buckle to make it look like Santa. I used my Cricut to cut the vinyl for my sign and am including my cut file in the instructions. The shapes are simple enough that it would be easy to recreate if you are using a different cutting machine or if you want to change the font or something.

How to Make an I Believe in Santa sign

You will need:

Prepare your board by painting the whole thing red.

Open this design in Cricut Design Space or create your own design by making a black rectangle about 2" x 9.5" (I made it long enough that it would wrap around the edge a little bit, you may need to adjust that if you don't want it to wrap or if your board is thinner than mine). A gold square that is about 3" x 3" with a smaller square cut out of it. Last you need the words "I Believe" to fit along the bottom of your board.

Cut out your design and place on the board. I put the words on first so I could make sure I had enough room below the belt. I used transfer tape for the words but not for the belt and buckle since they were each only one piece.

Now let's check out the rest of the amazing Christmas creations!

  1. I love that the modern version of Miracle on 34th Street has something in it that your family can relate to. Such a fun sign inspired by the movie.

  2. I also love both versions of the movie. Your sign turned out beautifully! My boys are still young and Santa is very much believed in our house, so we would love this.
