Diaper clutch and zipper pouch

I remember when we were getting ready for our first baby to be born we got a nice big diaper bag and all of the things to go with it. We packed that thing full of everything we might need and lugged it everywhere with us. It seems like with each kid I have put less and less in that bag, even though I have more kids. Half the time I don't even bring it with me. I might just throw a couple diapers and a small thing of wipes in my purse or bag, or just leave the diaper bag in the car and only go get it if I need to change a diaper. Right now that is working great, I just have one toddler in diapers and as long as I have a diaper or two and some wipes that is usually all I need. However, now we are only a few months away from having a new little baby and there are a few other things I may want to have with me.  I thought that it would be nice to make a little set of bags that I could put the few things that I need in and then stick in my other bags that I may be carrying around or even just keep in the car in case I ever forget to grab stuff. I made a set of two bags, one a diaper clutch to hold a few diapers and maybe a small thing of wipes, the other is a zipper pouch that can hold an extra outfit or maybe a pacifier or other small things. I thought those would give me a way to have the essentials with me even when I don't want to carry a diaper bag.

Huggies diapers and wipes

After I decided what I wanted to do I headed over to Walmart to buy the things I would need. I picked up some Huggies ® Little Snugglers in size 1, they are my favorite diapers for little babies.  Since it has been 3 years since having a newborn it is crazy to see how tiny the little diapers are. I also picked up some Huggies ® Natural Care Wipes.  While I was there I went over to the fabric section and found some fabrics that I liked, I wanted something that worked for a baby but wasn't overly babyish. I decided on some mint green and gray prints. Once I had all of my supplies I was ready to go home and get started.

You will also need some interfacing or fusible fleece, a zipper, and some velcro, as well as normal sewing supplies like thread and scissors, etc. I had all of that stuff at home so I didn't need to buy that.

diaper clutch

The diaper clutch is about 9 1/2" x 6". It is longer than it needs to be for the little in diapers but I wanted to be able to use it for bigger diapers as the baby grows. It has a flap that folds over the the top with a velcro closure.

zipper pouch

The zipper pouch is 7 1/2" x 9 1/2" with a zipper closure. Both bags are lined.

How to Make the Baby Travel Set

Includes Diaper Clutch (finished size 9 1/2" x 6") and Zipper Pouch (finished size 7 1/2" x 9 1/2")

You will need:

1/4 yard of fabric for outside of each bag
1/4 yard of fabric for lining of each bag
12 inch zipper for zipper pouch (it will be longer than you need but a 9" zipper will be too short)
2" piece of velcro for diaper clutch
1/4 yard of medium weight fusible interfacing for diaper clutch
1/4 yard fusible fleece for zipper pouch
coordinating thread
rotary cutter, mat, ruler, scissors
sewing machine

Instructions:

Diaper Clutch

First cut out your pieces, you will need to cut one piece of each of the following sizes from your outside fabric, lining, and interfacing.

1- 6 1/2" x 13"
1- 6 1/2" x 10"

The 13" piece will be your back and flap. To angle in the flap slightly measure 2 1/2" down on the 13" side and 1/2" in on the shorter side and mark. Draw a line between those points, fold your fabric in half longways so that you can cut both sides at once and cut along that line. This creates the flap section.

Iron your interfacing on to your fabric, I put it on my outside fabric. Then place the two matching pieces right sides together and sew around the two sides and bottom. Do the same thing with the lining fabrics but leave an opening in the bottom so that you can turn it. Clip corners.

Place the lining fabric inside of outside fabric, right sides together and matching up the top edges. Sew around the top front edge and flap. Clip corners and turn right side out through the opening in the lining.

Stitch the opening closed. Tuck the lining inside of the clutch and press. Topstitch around the front and flap. Sew velcro to the front of the clutch and the flap.

Zipper Pouch

Cut 2- 8" x 10" rectangles from your lining fabric, your outside fabric and  the fusible fleece.

Iron the fusible fleece to the wrong side of your outside fabric.

Sandwich one side of the zipper between the outside and lining fabrics, so that the outside edge of the zipper lines up with the edge of the fabric and the right side of the zipper is facing the right side of the outside fabric, fabrics should also be right sides together. Sew a 1/4" seam along the edge, sewing the zipper in place. Repeat on the other side.

With the zipper open partway match up the outside fabrics and the inside fabrics and sew all the way around leaving an opening in the lining to turn.

Turn right side out, stitch opening closed. Tuck lining into pouch and press if desired. Topstitch around zipper.
