5 Little Monsters: The Aspen Hat

The Aspen Hat

January is not my favorite time of the year. It is so cold and Christmas is over, although there are several birthdays in my family so that is one bright spot. But one thing about a month that is freezing cold is it is a great month for crocheting. And for wearing the things that you crochet.

However, even though it is still crochet weather I was starting to feel a little burnt out from all of the holiday crocheting, both creating new patterns for the blog and crocheting gifts for family and friends. As a result I wanted to make something that would work up really quick. One of my favorite fixes when I start feeling a little burnt out is a quick project. Finishing something always feels really good and helps me kind of get out of that rut.

I had this hat and cowl set on my schedule for the beginning of the year but because I really wanted a quick project I adapted the idea I had originally had to be make with super bulky yarn, I used Lion Brand Hometown USA. It was so quick to make. And nice and squishy and warm too, which was perfect for the super cold days and snow we have been having. I really loved how it turned out.

Today I am only sharing the hat pattern, the cowl pattern will be available on Saturday. Both the hat and the cowl call for 2 skeins of yarn, but they each use 1 full skein and part of a second so if you are making the set you can make them both with 3 skeins total.

How to Crochet The Aspen Hat

You will need:

Hat is made bottom up, the first 3 rows make the band around the bottom, then the following rows are worked in the stitch pattern that makes up the body of the hat. When working the body of the hat you will be turning your work each round and working into the sc stitches from the previous round.

ch 42

join to first ch to make a circle

Round 1: ch 1, sc in each ch, join with sl st to first sc (42 sc)
Round 2: ch 1, sc in blo in each stitch, sl st to first st to join (42 sc)
Round 3: ch 1, sc in blo in each stitch, sl st to first st to join (42 sc)
Round 4: ch 1, (sc, hdc, dc) in blo of first stitch, skip next 2 stitches, [(sc, hdc, dc) in blo of next stitch, skip next 2 stitches] repeat around (14 sc, hdc, dc)
Round 5:  ch 1, turn,  (sc, hdc, dc) in first stitch (sc from previous row), skip next 2 stitches, [(sc, hdc, dc) in next stitch, skip next 2 stitches] repeat around (14 sc, hdc, dc)
Round 6-12: repeat round 5
Round 13: ch 1, sc3tog (working in top of sc, hdc, dc) around (7 sc3tog)

finish off and cut yarn, leaving a long tail for sewing, weave the tail through the stitches of the last round and pull to cinch the top closed, stitch in place to secure, add the pom-pom to the top of the hat

  2. I'm confused. In round 5, if I turn won't the double crochet be the first stitch?

    1. If you start in the same stitch that you slip stitch into when you join your round it will be a single crochet. It feels a little awkward but it works well. If you don't want to work into that stitch you would need to slip stitch over to the next sc before you start the next round.
