Unicorn and Rainbow Easter Egg Covers

A few years ago, when I had just started my blog, I shared a pattern for some Easter egg covers. I crocheted little egg shaped covers that could slip over a regular size plastic Easter egg and decorated them to look like a bunny, a chick, and a lamb. They were really quick an easy to make and looked so cute in an Easter basket, way cuter than a plain old plastic egg. Every year when Easter comes around I think about making a new version of those egg covers and this year I finally did it. I decided that since just about every little girl I know loves unicorns right now, it would be fun to make a unicorn themed set.

For this set I made a unicorn egg cover, as well as a coordinating rainbow cover. The unicorn has ears, a horn, and flowers stitched on. They rainbow cover is just simple stripes. I did a couple different versions of the rainbow, one with brighter colors and one a little lighter, just to play around a little bit with the colors.

The egg covers are open on the bottom and they slide right over the plastic egg, pointier side of the egg up.

To remove the egg from the cover simply sqeeze and they egg will come out.

Such a fun way to dress up a simple egg and make the whole basket a little more fun.

How to Make Unicorn and Rainbow Easter Egg Covers

You will need:

• Worsted Weight Yarn in a variety of colors (you only need a small amount, I used scrap balls of Red Heart Super Saver and With Love, All Things You Worsted, Lion Brand DIYarn, etc.)
• G crochet hook
• Regular size plastic Easter Eggs
• Yarn needle
• Scissors

Instructions:

Both the rainbow and unicorn eggs use the same basic egg pattern, it is the same pattern that I used for the bunny, chick, and lamb. The only difference is that in order to have the stripes line up I chose to join each round where the others are all worked in a spiral. I change my color in the last stitch of the round before the color change, when working the last sc of the round instead of pulling through a loop of the same color, pull through a loop of the new color.

Rainbow Egg

Start with pink or red yarn
Round 1: begin with magic ring, ch 1, 6 sc, join to first sc (6 sc)Round 2: ch 1, 2 sc in each stitch, join to first sc (12 sc)
change to orange yarnRound 3: ch 1, [1 sc in first stitch, 2 sc in next stitch] repeat around, join to first sc (18 sc)
Round 4: ch 1, 1 sc in each stitch, join to first sc (18 sc)
change to yellow yarn
Round 5: ch 1, [1 sc in next 5 stitches, 2 sc in next stitch] repeat around, join to first sc (21 sc)
Round 6: ch 1, [1 sc in next 6 stitches, 2 sc in next stitch] repeat around, join to first sc (24 sc)
change to green yarn
Round 7-8: ch 1, 1 sc in each stitch, join to first sc (24 sc)
change to blue yarn
Round 9: ch 1, 1 sc in each stitch, join to first sc (24 sc)
Round 10: ch 1, [1 sc in next 10 stitches, dec across next 2] repeat around, join to first sc (22 sc)
change to purple yarnRound 11: ch 1, 1 sc in next 4 stitches, dec, 1 sc in next 9, dec, 1 sc in next 5, join to first sc (20 sc)Round 12: ch 1, 1 sc in each stitch (20 sc)Slip stitch to the next stitch to join, finish off and weave in ends

Unicorn Egg

with white yarn

Round 1: begin with magic ring, 6 sc (6 sc)
Round 2: 2 sc in each stitch (12 sc)
Round 3: [1 sc in first stitch, 2 sc in next stitch] repeat around (18 sc)
Round 4: 1 sc in each stitch (18 sc)
Round 5: [1 sc in next 5 stitches, 2 sc in next stitch] repeat around (21 sc)
Round 6: [1 sc in next 6 stitches, 2 sc in next stitch] repeat around (24 sc)
Round 7-9: 1 sc in each stitch (24 sc)
Round 10: [1 sc in next 10 stitches, dec across next 2] repeat around (22 sc)
Round 11: 1 sc in next 4 stitches, dec, 1 sc in next 9, dec, 1 sc in next 5 (20 sc)
Round 12: 1 sc in each stitch (20 sc)
Slip stitch to the next stitch to join, finish off and weave in ends

Make Horn

with yellow yarn
Round 1: in magic ring, ch 1, 3 sc (3 sc)
Round 2: 2 sc in first stitch, 1 sc in next, 2 sc in next stitch (5 sc)
Round 3-5: sc in each stitch (5 sc)

stitch to top of egg cover, slighty towards the front rather than directly on top

Make 2 Ears

with white yarn
ch 4, sc in second stitch, hdc in next, dc in next

stitch the ears to the top of the cover, to either side and slightly behind the horn

Make 3 flowers

I made 1 purple 5 petal flower and 2 pink 4 petal flowers

in magic ring, [ch 3, slip stitch in mr] repeat for a total of 4 or 5 petals

You could stitch eyes on the front if you want, I chose to leave mine plain. If you do stitch eyes on I would recommend using embroidery floss rather than yarn because they are so small.

Fill eggs with treats and put inside the covers with the pointy side up.
