Not too long ago I shared a new crocheted hat pattern. It used the bead stitch in a different way than the other bead stitch hats I had shared previously, boxed in between double crochet stitches and rounds of single crochet. It was also made with a bulky weight yarn, Caron Colorama O'Go.
I loved working with the bulky weight yarn to make that hat, it made it work up super fast, and extra cozy. But I work most often with medium/worsted/#4 weight yarn. I have a lot of it and it is such a versatile weight of yarn that I use it for almost everything. Plus, it is easy to find and buy because every big yarn brand has multiple yarns in this weight that are pretty easily substituted.
So, while I designed the pattern for the bulky weight hat, I was already making plans to make a medium weight version. Not long before I had finished a blanket using Red Heart Super Saver in Retro Stripes and I had a little left over. I immediately thought of using that yarn to make that the worsted weight version of the boxed beads hat.
Then I decided I wanted to make a few more size options so I used different color ways of the Super Saver Stripes to make the different sizes. It was fun to see the colors change as I made the hats. They are a little more bright and colorful than what I usually choose, but they turned out really fun.
The pattern is available in Adult Med/Lg, Adult Sm/Teen, Child, Toddler, and Baby.
How to Crochet Boxed Beads Hat in 5 Sizes
You will need:
- Medium weight yarn in desired colors, I used Red Heart Super Saver Stripes in Retro Stripe (Adult Medium/Large), Polo Stripe (Adult Small/Teen), Parrot Stripe (Child), Fruity Stripe (Toddler), and Cool Stripe (Baby)
- I crochet hook (5.5mm)
- yarn needle
- scissors
Instructions:
Each hat is made top down, starting with a magic ring. Beginning ch does not count as a stitch.
Bead Stitch: the Bead Stitch is basically a puff stitch worked around the post of the dc next to it, In this boxed version you will work a dc stitch between each Bead Stitch (separate from the dc post you work the puff stitch around)
