It is October, and that means it is time for the next Bear of the Month, the 10th one in the set. Typically I choose a theme for the bear that matches the season or a holiday that happens that month. This month I chose to do something a little bit different, but there is a reason I chose to do that. This month's bear is a Birthday Bear.
The obvious choice for this month was a Halloween theme, but the thing that inspired the idea for the Bear of the Month Crochet Along was the Bewitching Bears Crochet Along that I did last year in October. It was a series of 6 Halloween themed bears- a witch bear, a pumpkin bear, a ghost bear, a candy corn bear, a Frankenstein bear, and a vampire bear. After that crochet along I decided that I thought it would be fun to do the same thing, but over the course of a full year, and make little bears for each season.
The bear pattern I use for the base of the Bear of the Month Bears is exactly the same as the pattern I used for the Bewitching Bears so I already have 6 Halloween themed bears and decided that I didn't want to make another. I wanted to come up with something different and October happens to be my birthday month, and I thought that a birthday bear would be fun to make. You could make it for any month that make sense for you or your family. Or I know some people are making the bears as a gift for someone, so it could be for whenever their birthday is. Then for Halloween/October you can fill in with any or all of the 6 Bewitching Bears.
For the bear I used the same basic bear pattern as I use for all of the bears. I have been trying to use a variety of different shades of brown, black, and white for my bears. I have a couple of browns that I have used a couple of times so I was going to reuse another this month and I decided on Red Heart Super Saver in Sienna, the same color I used for my Leprechaun Bear in March. It is kind of an orange brown color, which is why I used it for the Leprechaun, but I thought it worked for October as well. But you could use any shade of brown you want, or you could use black, white, or a fun color of your choice. I almost made another black bear, but although I love how the black bears turn out, black is my least favorite color to work with so I chose a shade of brown instead.
To turn my little bear into a birthday bear I chose to give it a little cone shaped birthday hat, and a cupcake with a little birthday candle. You could use any colors you want for these. I chose kind of a pastel theme with a light blue and yellow hat, a yellow cupcake with pink frosting and a purple candle. I just pulled yarn from my stash so it was a mixture of brands. I used Big Twist Value in Sky Blue, Loops and Threads Soft Classic in Butter, and Red Heart Super Saver in Baby Pink and Light Jasmine.
With October's Bear we have 10 bears done, and only 2 more to go! The November and December Bears will be released on the first of each month.
