It is June 1st, which means it is time for the next Bear of the Month. This is Bear number 6, and that means we are halfway done. This month I had a really hard time deciding what to make. I wanted a bear that would represent summer, but there were several different summer activities I could have chosen and it was hard to choose which one to go with, but I ended up deciding on...
A Little Hiker Bear! I live in Utah where we can be up in the mountains in a matter of minutes so when I was trying to come up with a summer activity that I could use for my bear, hiking or camping was an obvious contender. Even though I decided to call my bear a hiker, it could represent camping as well, but since I gave it a hiking stick I called it a Hiker Bear.
In addition to the hiking stick I also gave my little outdoorsy bear a hat and a backpack. A few years ago I had a camping themed mini amigurumi crochet along and I had a little backpack with a bedroll on the bottom as one of the minis and I made this one very similar to that one, not exactly but the same idea. With the backpack, and the hat, and the hiking stick, as well as all of the normal bear pieces, this one has a lot of little pieces. So fair warning, you will be doing some sewing. You could choose to leave the backpack off if you want to simplify it a little bit, and I think it would still look like a hiker, but I liked the extra touch of the backpack
I also decided to make this bear a black bear. You can obviously make the bears in any color you want, but so far I have made a white/polar bear, and then a variety of different shades of brown. I have been wanting to include a black bear in the set, but for the last few I have chosen browns. For the graduate bear I didn't want black in case I decided to make a black hat, for the Easter bear I wanted a light tan to go with the more pastel/Easter colors, and for the leprechaun I chose a brown that had an orange tone to it to kind of represent the orange hair/beards that you often see with leprechauns. But this time a black bear seemed like the perfect fit. Obviously all bears live in similar habitats but a black bear just seemed extra fitting for a hiker bear for some reason.
For this bear I used Red Heart Super Saver yarn for almost all of the colors, only the blue for the backpack was a different brand. I have been trying to work on using up what I have in my stash so I will mix and match brands as long as they are all comparable in weight. The colors I used were Red Heart Super Saver in Black and Buff for the bear, Frosty Green for the hat, Cafe Latte for the hat ties, bedroll straps, and hiking stick, Red Heart Super Saver Ombre in Hot Sauce for the bedroll, and Loops and Threads Soft Classic in Cornflower for the backpack.
This is bear number 6, which means we have reached the halfway point. As I mentioned last month, I have decided to release the ebook in 2 parts, Part 1 with patterns 1-6, then Part 2 with patterns 7-12 once they have all been released. I am currently working on getting the ebook done so it should be available very soon, I will add the link here when it is ready.

If you want to add some sturdiness to your stick you can fold a pipe cleaner to the size of the walking stick and insert it inside, I left mine without it and I think it is fine but it is personal preference if you want the added stability
Weave the end closed and stitch to the bears hand (I just stuck my needle with my tail up to the center of the stick and used that to attach it to the hand)
