We are on Day 3 of the Happy Harvest Mini Amigururmi Crochet Along and today we have a little fruit joining the harvest, the Happy Apple.
Apples are a fruit that definitely makes me think of fall, when I think of a fall harvest apples are one of the first things that come to mind, so I knew I needed to include an apple in this set. Not every fruit or vegetable included is going to be something that is harvested in the fall, for example I always associate carrots with being more of an early harvest, spring or early summer, although I guess you can also plant them later in the season and harvest in the fall too. But since this is a fall crochet along I did want to include some that really felt like fall, and the apple was one of those.
The little apple looks a little funny as you are crocheting it, because the shaping really comes when you stitch through the center after you finish crocheting. This pulls the top and bottom to the center creating an indent on both sides giving it the apple shape. You can see the before and after below. It starts out kind of egg shaped, but when you pull in top and bottom to the center you get the apple shape.
The little apple has a little smiley face just like the other fruits and vegetables in the series. I use safety eyes and an embroidered smile. You can always embroider both the eyes and the mouth if you don't want to use safety eyes, or even leave the face of completely is you prefer. Then it is finished off with a tiny stem and a little leaf that are sewn onto the top of the apple.
I didn't want to use really bright colors for my fruits and vegetables and the only true red I had at the time that I made the apple was a very bright red, not a deeper red that I wanted to use, so I ended up using Red Heart Super Saver in Brick Red instead, which is kind of a more muted red color. I wasn't sure exactly how it would turn out but I think it worked pretty well and matched the vibe of the other pieces in the set. You could use a brighter red, or a green or yellow, for your apple, whatever you want. For the stem and leaf I also used Red Heart Super Saver in the colors Cafe Latte and Medium Thyme

How to Crochet a Happy Apple
Finished Size: about 3" tall
You will need:
- medium weight yarn in red or desired color for apple, and brown and green for stem and leaf (sample made in Red Heart Super Saver in Brick Red, Cafe Latte, and Medium Thyme)
- G crochet hook (4/4.25 mm)
- 2- 6 mm safety eyes
- Polyfil fiberfill
- yarn needle
- stitch markers
- scissors
- black embroidery floss and needle
Instructions:
The squash is made in 3 pieces, the apple, the leaf, and the stem. The apple starts with a magic ring, and is finished by stitching through from the top to the bottom to pull them in towards each other creating the apple shape. The other 2 pieces are made starting with a chain and sewn onto the apple.
Apple
Make 1 with red yarn (or desired color), beginning with a magic ring
Round 1: in mr, ch 1, 6 sc (6 sc)
Round 2: 2 sc in each st (12 sc)
Round 3: [2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next 3 sts] repeat around (15 sc)
Round 4: [2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next 4 sts] repeat (18 sc)
Round 5: [2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next 5 sts] repeat (21 sc)
Round 6: [2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next 6 sts] repeat (24 sc)
Round 7: [2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next 7 sts] repeat (27 sc)
Round 8: [2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next 8 sts] repeat (30 sc)
Rounds 9-13: 1 sc in each st (30 sc)
Insert eyes between rounds 8-9 about 3 sts apart, stitch a mouth below the eyes
Begin stuffing and continue stuffing as you work
Round 14: [sc2tog, 1 sc in next 3 sts] repeat around (24 sc)
Round 15: [sc2tog, 1 sc in next 2 sts] repeat around (18 sc)
Round 16: [sc2tog, 1 sc in next st] repeat around (12 sc)
Round 17: sc2tog, repeat around (6 sc)
Finish off, and cut yarn leaving a long tail for next step
Weave opening closed
Poke needle down from the center top of the apple, down to the center bottom, then back up from the bottom center to the top center, pulling so that the top and bottom both pull in to the middle creating an indent on both top and bottom of the apple. Repeat again stitching through the center of the apple, then secure and weave in end to finish.
Stem
Make 1 with brown yarn, beginning with a chain
ch 5
Row 1: sc in 2nd ch from hook, sl st in last 3 sts (1 sc, 3 sl st)
Cut yarn leaving long tail for sewing
Sew stem to the top of the apple in the indented center
Leaf
Make 1 with green yarn, beginning with a chain
ch 5
Round 1: sl st in first ch from hook, sc in next ch, hdc in each of next 2 ch, sc in next ch, sl st in last ch, ch 1, turn to work along opposite side of ch in unworked loops, sl st in first ch, sc in next ch, hdc in each of next 2 ch, sc in next ch, sl st in last ch (4 sl st, 4, sc, 4 hdc)
Cut yarn leaving long tail for sewing
Sew leaf to the top of the apple next to the stem
