It is Day 4 of the Happy Harvest Mini Amigururmi Crochet Along and joining the harvest today is the Pleasant Potato.
One thing that is always really hard about these crochet alongs is narrowing it down to which things I am going to include that go along with the theme that I have chosen. There are always more than 12 options that I could include, which means some have to get left out and deciding which make the cut and which don't can be a challenge. I really wanted to include a potato, but I was also kind of on the fence about it because I was nervous about being able to make it look like a potato and not just a brown blob. But I think it worked out.
I will say that when I first made my potato I was pretty happy with it, but then I put it with the rest of the fruits and veggies that I had done at that time and it felt too big, so I tried making a smaller version but then it was way too small. I decided to stick with the original size and as I added more fruits and vegetables to the set I felt like it looked like it fit in better. It is only about 3.5" tall, which is well within, and even on the smaller side, of the 3-5" I say my mini amigurumi will be. I think it felt bigger to me because it is just a solid brown shape, it doesn't have as much shaping as some of the others, or a leaf or stem to break up the brown.
To make the potato I started with kind of an oval shape, although I did make it a little fatter on the bottom so it isn't a perfect oval. Once it was finished I made some dimples randomly all over the potato by stitching through and pulling it just enough to create a little dimple in the potato. I did this a few times around the potato, I think I made 6 total, and I felt like it really helped it look more like a potato.
I was going for the look of a Russet potato, so I chose a brown color for my potato. Depending on what you are wanting to make you could use a lighter tan color, a yellow color, or even a red or dark purple. I used Red Heart Super Saver in Cafe Latte for my potato. To make the little dimples I decided to use a different color and I wanted a lighter color since if eyes start growing from the dimples they are a light color and I just thought it would bring in another color and a little variation, so I used Red Heart Super Saver in Buff. But honestly, if I were to remake it I would just stick with the brown color. Most of the dimples you can't see the color at all, but there is one that you can and it is right on the front and it kind of stands out.

How to Crochet a Pleasant Potato
Finished Size: about 3.5" tall
You will need:
- medium weight yarn in brown or desired color (sample made in Red Heart Super Saver in Cafe Latte, with Buff used for stitching dimples but you can use the same color for both)
- G crochet hook (4/4.25 mm)
- 2- 6 mm safety eyes
- Polyfil fiberfill
- yarn needle
- stitch markers
- scissors
- black embroidery floss and needle
Instructions:
The potato is made in 1 piece starting with a magic ring. After it is finished you will stitch through the potato in random places to create little dimples in the potato skin.
Potato
Make 1 with brown yarn (or desired color), beginning with a magic ring
Round 1: in mr, ch 1, 6 sc (6 sc)
Round 2: 2 sc in each st (12 sc)
Round 3: [2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next st] repeat around (18 sc)
Round 4: [2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next 2 sts] repeat (24 sc)
Round 5: [2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next 3 sts] repeat (30 sc)
Rounds 6-8: 1 sc in each st (30 sc)
Round 9: [sc2tog, 1 sc in next 3 sts] repeat around (24 sc)
Rounds 10-16: 1 sc in each st (24 sc)
Insert eyes between rounds 10-11 about 3 sts apart, stitch a mouth below the eyes
Begin stuffing and continue stuffing as you work
Round 17: [sc2tog, 1 sc in next 2 sts] repeat around (18 sc)
Round 18: [sc2tog, 1 sc in next st] repeat around (12 sc)
Round 19: sc2tog, repeat around (6 sc)
Finish off, and cut yarn leaving a long tail for next step
Weave opening closed and weave in end to finish
Cut a long piece of yarn and starting in the back of the potato insert your needle into the pumpkin and pull out where you want the first dimple to be, leaving a small tail sticking out where you inserted the needel. Take a small stitch poking the needle back through the potato coming out where you want the next dimple to be, pull just enough to create a dimple where you made the first stitch. Insert the needle back in making another small stitch, and poking it out where you want the next dimple to be. Repeat this process until you have as many dimples as you want on your potato. I made 6 total, 4 on the front kind of unevenly surrounding the face, and a couple on the back. When you are finished poke you needle out the same hole as you started, where your tail should still be sticking out, tie the two ends together in a knot, trim the ends very short, and poke the knot into the potato burying it inside.
