A while ago I received a surprise package from Red Heart containing a couple of skeins of yarn for me to try. About a month ago I shared the pattern for a cowl made from the Twilight yarn. At the time I was working on a project with the other skein of yarn but had gotten kind of stuck trying to figure out how to make it turn out the way I wanted it to, so it wasn't done. I really didn't want to just make cowls or scarves with both skeins of yarn because that just seemed too obvious. I really wanted to do something different.
The Infinity yarn is so soft and I love the subtle color changes, I really liked working with it. I came up with a project that involved both crocheting and sewing and I was just kind of having a difficult time deciding how exactly I wanted it all to come together. I set it aside for a while and then I picked it up again, determined that I would finish it this time. I got the crocheted piece done, but then I couldn't decide what kind of fabric I wanted to use to go with it so it got set aside again. I had a little bit of yarn left after finishing the crocheted portion of my project and I really wanted to get something made with that yarn that I could share. So that is where this little cowl came into the picture. I decided to make a little, tiny toddler cowl with the yarn that was left.
I really like cowls for little kids. They are easy to put on, you don't really need to worry about them wrapping it around too tight like they could a scarf, but you are still able to keep them nice and warm. This yarn is really soft and thick so I thought it would be really nice for a little toddler size cowl, or any size for that matter. I probably used less than half the skein for this size so you should be able to make it larger so that it is adult size or a larger child size and still only use one skein. This size fits my 2 and 3 year old daughters that typically wear in the 2T-4T range, my 6 year old can put it on too and it isn't tight but it just seems a little too small.
How to Crochet Enchanted Toddler Cowl
Approximately 9 1/2" laying flat and 5" tall
You will need:
- 1 skien Red Heart Boutique Infinity (I used the Enchanted colorway and less than half the skein)
- N crochet hook
ch 42, join into a circle without twisting ch
Round 1: ch 4, dc in same stitch, skip 2, 3 dc in next stitch, [skip 2, (dc, ch 1, dc) in next stitch, skip 2, 3 dc in next stitch] repeat around, slip stitch into first ch space to join (7 v-stitch, 7 3 dc)
Repeat round 1 until desired height is reached, working a [dc, ch 1, dc] in each ch 1 space and 3 dc in the center dc of the 3 dc of the row below. I worked a total of 6 rows.
Cowl can easily be made larger by adding a multiple of 6 to the beginning chain until desired length is reached. Then add more rounds to add extra height.
