This week is my 4th Annual Book Inspired Craft Week. Each day this week I will be sharing a favorite book and pairing it with a craft project inspired by the book. A lot of the books I have shared in this series are books from my childhood, books that I remember reading and loving. Others are favorites of my kids, books that have helped them gain a love of reading. The book that I chose for the first project this year is one that I read as a kid- The Secret Garden.

Today is a day I have been looking forward to all year. Two years ago I started what has now become an annual series on my blog- Book Inspired Craft Week. It is a week long series around the first week of March, which is also right around Read Across America Week and Dr. Seuss's Birthday. Every year my kids schools do a week of special activities, dress up days, read-a-thons, etc. and a couple years ago I thought, I love books and I love crafts, why not combine the two and join in the reading themed fun. Each day I choose a book that is either one that I remember loving when I was a kid, or one that has been a favorite of my kids or other family members, or that have some kind of connection to. I try to include a variety of picture books and chapter books, but all kid friendly.

I am popping in in the middle of my book inspired craft week with a Team Creative Crafts collaboration. I chose to make something book related but not inspired by a specific book for my project this month, although later today I will be sharing the next book inspired craft project for the week. This month the theme for the projects was rainbows.

A new month means another Team Creative Crafts collaboration and this month the theme is back to school crafts. It is crazy to think that summer is already coming to an end and kids are heading back to school soon, or in some places already have. My kids head back in a couple of weeks and we have been spending a lot of time lately getting things ready, going to registrations, school shopping, and attempting to get back in a good routine for the school year.

I loved to read as a kid, I would spend hours every day with my nose in a book. I remember getting in trouble for staying up too late reading. I have always felt like that love of reading is something that I want to share with my kids, but sometimes it seems like they would rather be sitting in front of a screen.

One of my goals this year is to read more. I love reading and as a kid I read all the time. As an adult I have found it harder to make time to read because I feel like I always have a million other things I should be doing. Of course, I also find myself wasting time on my phone a lot so I am trying to spend less time mindlessly scrolling through social media and more time reading books instead.

New Young Women's Theme Printables

This past weekend was our church's (The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) Semiannual General Conference. If you are not familiar with this it is a weekend twice a year where we listen to leaders of our church speak on a variety of topics. Sometimes during conference announcements and changes are made to different programs in the church. Some of the changes announced this time had to do with the Young Women's program (program for 12-18 year old girls).

This year I am joining a few other craft bloggers with a monthly craft challenge. I have participated in the past but it has been a while. In the past we had a monthly theme but they were usually related to a holiday or season or something like that. This year we decided to switch it up a little bit and base our monthly themes on a craft supply or medium. This month the theme was Washi Tape.

Kids Crafts- Leather Bookmarks

This month Alli from Made with Happy has put together a series of Kid's Crafts from Around the World. When she asked for people who wanted to participate I was really excited to sign up. First of all I thought it sounded like a really fun idea. I have always enjoyed learning about different countries and cultures and I think kid's crafts are a fun way to do that. In fact, a couple of years ago I spent a summer doing "Mom School" with my kids using an around the world type theme. We did some fun projects based on the different countries we were learning about. We made little passports, learned about the different flags, did little craft projects and cooked food from different places. It was a lot of fun. This kind of reminded me of that. The other reason why I was really excited was because I knew exactly what country I wanted to do.

Easy Fabric Bookmarks- Kids Sewing Project

I have a little girl who has been begging me to teach her to sew for a while now. I started her with some simple embroidery but she got bored with that pretty quick. She really wants to learn to sew with the sewing machine. I have been trying to come up with something that would be really easy for her to make for her first try at the machine. I thought of lots of really simple projects that are just sewing straight lines for the seams, things like skirts or pillowcases. But for her first project I wanted something where she wasn't sewing seams so that if her seam allowance wasn't even it wasn't a big deal. That might come from the fact that the first thing that I remember sewing was a quilt and my seam allowances were kind of all over the place, sometimes way too close to the edge, so the first time through the wash it started to fall apart.

Hogwarts House Scarf Bookmarks

I am really excited to be participating in the Happy Harry Potter Series on Rae Gun Ramblings. It came up at the perfect time. A month or two ago we decided to introduce our oldest son to Harry Potter by showing him the movies. We watched the first one and he loved it and couldn't wait to watch the next one. We went through all of the movies and he was a huge fan. I am more of a book person so watching the movies made me want to read the books again. I started reading them again and I am almost finished with the sixth book. After finishing the movies again I also signed up for Pottermore so that I could find out which house I would be in. Then Johnny needed to try it, and then a couple of the other kids, then when dad got home they insisted he try it too. I was sorted into Ravenclaw, my husband was sorted into Gryffindor and the kids that tried it ended up in Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff, and Slytherin, so between all of us we have all of the houses covered.
