When I think of January I think of cold and snowy. We haven't had much snow yet this season where I live, but I know half the country has been getting hit hard with snow and ice storms over the past couple of days. I'm not terribly sad we haven't had lots of snow because I don't really love it, especially driving in it, but it can be awfully pretty when everything is covered in a blanket of white.

When I got my Cricut Maker 3 I knew I wanted my first project to be using some of the new Smart Materials, and the one I was the most excited to try was the Smart Paper Sticker Cardstock. I thought it would make paper crafting so much easier because there wouldn't be a need for glue or other adhesives.

I have spent pretty much my whole life, minus a few years in California when I was a little kid, living in places that get snow in the winter, and now I even live in a state that has the slogan "Greatest Snow on Earth", but I still do not really love the snow.

January is not my favorite time of the year. It is so cold and Christmas is over, although there are several birthdays in my family so that is one bright spot. But one thing about a month that is freezing cold is it is a great month for crocheting. And for wearing the things that you crochet.

I love the texture that can be created by combining different crochet stitches. My goal when designing this hat was to create a hat with a lot of texture and visual interest. It combines rounds of bead stitch with rounds of half double crochet and a post stitch ribbing. A faux fur pom pom on the top finishes the hat.

Bead Stitch Cowl

This cowl pattern actually started out as a hat that I was working on and then I decided to make a scarf to match. I wanted to make something that had a lot of texture to it. I used a combination of a couple different stitches to give me the texture I was looking for. One of the stitches I used was one that I had not tried before, the bead stitch. The bead stitch is similar to a puff or bobble stitch but it is worked sideways around a double crochet in the same row instead of into the row before. I used rows of bead stitch in between rows of half double crochet.

With Christmas just around the corner it will soon be time to take down all of the Christmas decor and change it out for new things. I decided that I wanted something wintery to hang on my front door when Christmas comes down. Nothing says winter like snowflakes so I decided to make a snowflake welcome banner to hang on the door.

Luckily it is a super quick Christmas project that you still have time to make. I love the look of crocheted snowflakes but I don't particularly like working with thread so I decided to make some out of yarn instead.

One of our family's favorite things as the weather starts to get cooler is a cup of hot chocolate. We especially love it around Christmas time. There is nothing better than going out to see Christmas light displays or playing in the snow and then warming up with a delicious cup of hot chocolate. Hot Cocoa also makes a great gift for neighbors, friends, or teachers. You can add in a mug or two and crochet some mug cozies to wrap around them.
