I recently had a request to crochet a newborn size football hat and I figured as long as I was making it I might as well share the pattern here. Especially since football season is just starting up, these would make great baby gifts for any babies born this time of year. The person I was making it for wanted a photo prop type hat so I made it with long braids but I also made a version without braids because I think that if I was just going to put it on my baby when it was cold that is the way that I would want it, or at least with shorter braids. I only made it in newborn size so that is the only size this pattern is available in.
The hats are made exactly the same, the braids are just an optional addition. Because they are newborn hats and are pretty tiny, they work up really fast. That is one thing I love about making baby items, they are so quick and easy to make, and they are fun to give too.

Row 4: ch 2, turn, hdc dec, hdc in next 2 stitches, hdc dec (4 hdc)
Row 5: ch 2, turn, hdc dec, hdc dec (2 hdc)
Finish off, cut yarn
skip 15 stitches in the front of hat
attatch yarn and make the second earflap exactly the same as the first but do not cut yarn
sc all the way around the bottom of the hat
Cut a long length of white yarn and thread your yarn needle, pulling the yarn through so that it is doubled. You will be working with 2 strands of yarn.
I the center front of the hat make a long stitch from just above row 6 to just below row 7, then make 3 smaller, horizontal stitches, one at the bottom of that line, one in the center and one at the top. Weave in your ends.
To make the braids cut 6 long (about 1 yard) lengths of white yarn, and 12 long lengths of brown yarn. Divide those into 2 groups with 3 white and 6 brown in each group, one for each earflap. Attach with a larks foot knot by folding the group of yarn in half, inserting the hook into the bottom of the earflap from inside to outside, catching the folded loop of yarn and pulling it partway through. Then pull the loose ends through the loop you just made and pull to tighten. Separate into 3 sections, I always divide mine up evenly so there would be 2 white strands and 4 brown strands in each section, and braid. When the braid is the length that you want tie a knot in the end and trim.
I hope you enjoy this pattern, feel free to ask me if you have any questions.
