5 Little Monsters: Striped Crochet Pillow Cover

Striped Crochet Pillow Cover

I have been wanting to make a crocheted pillow cover for a while and I finally got it done. I recently had the opportunity to start working with Fairfield World as one of their Master Makers and they provided me with some supplies to work with. One of the things that I got from them were some pillow forms. I figured it was the perfect time to finally make a pillow. I had a couple of skeins of tweedy yarn that I had picked up on clearance a couple of months ago and I really wanted to use them to make a pillow. I originally had a more complicated pattern in mind but I only had one skein of each color which was not enough for a solid color pillow so I decided to keep it simple and make a striped pillow using both colors.

This is a really basic pattern, it is made entirely of half double crochet, alternating wide stripes of each color. I wanted to be able to remove the cover so I made a flap opening on the back with a button closure. If you don't care about removing the cover you could easily make it without the opening on the back.

Striped Crochet Pillow Cover

Finished Size 14x14 inches
Crocheted Piece will measure 13-13 1/2 inches prior to assembly but will stretch to fit pillow form

You will need:

I took the picture after making the pillow so the yarn is what is left over, you will need full skeins

Instructions:

Turning ch 2 does not count as a stitch

Front:

with first color ch 42
Row 1: hdc in 3rd ch from hook and each chain to the end (40 hdc)
Row 2-4: ch 2, turn, hdc in each stitch across (40 hdc)
at the end of row 4 change to second color
Row 5-8: ch 2, turn, hdc in each stitch across (40 hdc)
at the end of row 8 change back to first color
Continue pattern of 4 rows of hdc in each color until you have 4 stripes of each color, a total of 32 rows. Finish off and cut yarn

Optional: to make a fully enclosed pillow make 2 of the pillow front place them wrong sides together and single crocheting around the outside edge. Insert pillow form after crocheting around 3 sides, finish crocheting around 4th side. Finish off and weave in yarn ends.

Back Flaps:

Bottom Flap:
Make exactly the same as the Front but only make 24 rows (3 stripes of each color)

Top Flap:
Start with second color.
Row 1: hdc in 3rd ch from hook and each chain to the end (40 hdc)
Row 2-4: ch 2, turn, hdc in each stitch across (40 hdc)
at the end of row 4 change to first color
Row 5-8: ch 2, turn, hdc in each stitch across (40 hdc)
at the end of row 8 change back to second color
Row 9-12: ch 2, turn, hdc in each stitch across (40 hdc)
Row 13: ch 1, turn, single crochet in first 20 stitches, ch 5, sc in next 20 stitches (40 sc, ch 5 loop)

Assembly:

Layer your three pieces, wrong sides together, as follows:
Front, right side down
Bottom Flap, right side up, lined up with bottom of front
Top Flap, right side up, line up with top of front with button loop in the center

Single crochet around all 4 sides
sc in each stitch along top and bottom and evenly along each side, when crocheting along the sides be sure to go through all 3 layers where the flaps overlap. Sew button on bottom flap, use button loop to determine placement. Weave in all of the loose ends of yarn. Insert pillow form in the cover and button closed.

This is a really simple pillow to crochet. If you are looking for a beginner pillow this is a good one to try. Making it without the flap will make it even easier. Now that I have finally crocheted a pillow cover I have lots of ideas of other designs to try. I have already started on a cable version.
Thanks again to Fairfield World for providing some of the supplies.
