5 Little Monsters: Lacy Puff Stitch Hat

Lacy Puff Stitch Hat

I have mentioned before that while working on my bead stitch hat I wanted to find some faux fur pom poms to use for it and I found some packs on Amazon that came with 12 in a pack in a variety of colors. I kind of preferred the pack that had all neutral colors, tan, gray, black, white, etc., but I didn't think I would be making that many hats and I knew my girls would love the colorful pack that included pink, purple, and blue pom poms. As soon as the girls saw them they all picked which color they wanted. I already shared the hat I made for my middle daughter using the hot pink pom pom, this time it is my oldest daughter's turn.

Her favorite colors are purple and green, thanks to Mal from Disney Descendants, so she immediately chose the purple pom pom. She wanted either a purple or green hat to go along with it. We looked through my yarn and found a skein of Red Heart Super Saver Ombre in Spearmint and we thought it might look kind of neat. It is a little hard to tell in the pictures but the bottom of the hat is a darker almost tealish green and as you move toward the top of the hat it lightens to a pale mint color.

We have had a relatively warm winter this year so I decided to use a lacier stitch for this hat. It isn't super holey and open but more so than the stitches I usually use for hats. I used a lacy puff stitch which is a combination of v-stitches and puff stitches.

The hat is a large child/teen size. I can fit it on my head but would probalbly make it a little longer (just continue the stitch pattern of the body of the hat for a couple more rounds) if I was making it for myself.

How to Crochet a Lace Cluster Hat

You will need:

This hat is worked from the bottom up, starting with the ribbing. The lace puff stitch is worked in a multiple of 4 stitches so if you want to adjust the size of the hat you will want to either increase or decrease the rows of ribbing by a multiple of 4.

Special Stitch: 3dc puff- yo, insert in stitch, pull up loop, yo, insert in same stitch, pull up loop, yo, insert in same stitch, pull up loop, yo, pull through all loops on hook

Ribbing:

leave long tail before beginning ch

ch 6

Row 1: sc in 2nd stitch and each stitch to the end (5 sc)

Row 2-60: ch 1, turn, sc in blo of each stitch (5 sc)

do not cut yarn, stitch the two short ends together with the tail left at the beginning

Hat:

Round 1: ch 1, sc around the ribbing working 1 sc in each row of sc, join to first st with sl st (60 sc)

Round 2: ch 4 (counts as dc and ch 1), dc in same stitch, skip 1, 3dc puff, skip 1, [(dc, ch1, dc) in next stitch, skip 1, 3dc puff, skip 1] repeat around, join with sl st to first dc (15 puffs, 15 v-stitch)

Round 3: sl st into ch sp, ch 2, 3dc puff in ch sp, sk 1 st (you will be working the next stitch in the top of the puff in previous round), [(dc, ch 1, dc) in next stitch, sk 1, 3dc puff in ch sp, sk 1] repeat around (15 puffs, 15 v-stitch)

Round 4: sl st into the top of the first puff, ch 4 (counts as dc and ch 1), dc in same stitch, skip 1, 3dc puff in ch sp, skip 1, [(dc, ch1, dc) in next stitch, skip 1, 3dc puff in ch sp, skip 1] repeat around, join with sl st to first dc (15 puffs, 15 v-stitch)

Repeat rounds 3-4 until you have a total of 11 rounds of the lace puff stitch or until the hat reaches the length you want

Final Round: ch 1, sc2tog around (30 sc)

Finish off and cut yarn leaving a long end for closing up the hat and attaching pom pom. Weave yarn through the top round of sc and pull to close, stitch closed and attach pom pom. Weave in ends.
