Friday night family movie night is something my kids look forward to every week. I'm not sure if it is the movie that they are watching or the fact that they get to stay up late that they look forward to the most but whichever it is, they love it. As a result it is always fun when a new family friendly movie comes out, like Peter Rabbit, which came out earlier this month.

We headed to Walmart to pick up a copy. We got the Blu-Ray+DVD combo which also comes with a digital copy. While we were there we also got some special dinner and snack stuff for the kids, including Orville Redenbacher popcorn, movie theater butter since we were having a movie night. Nothing is better than hot buttery popcorn while watching a movie and Orville Redenbacher's is the only leading brand that uses real butter in some varieties, including the Movie Theater Butter. We also picked up some Kid Cuisine meals for a quick and easy dinner that the kids were all excited about. We don't get things like that often so they are kind of a special treat but what kid doesn't love chicken nuggets for dinner and most of their meals have a full serving of vegetables too.

Once we had everything we needed for our Peter Rabbit family movie night I thought it would be fun to make a little craft project to get them excited about the movie. My oldest daughter made some pom pom animals at school a while ago and had been begging me to help her make some at home too. I thought pom pom bunnies would be a fun project and she would be excited about it.

We made 2 sizes of pom poms and glued them together and then added little felt ears and google eyes.

How to Make Pom Pom Bunnies

You will need:

  • medium weight yarn
  • pom pom makers in 2 sizes or cardboard rectangles
  • scissors
  • glue gun and glue sticks
  • felt scraps in 2 colors
  • googly eyes

Instructions:

I used a pom pom maker to make my pom poms, there are several different types and brands and any of them will work, or you can just wrap yarn around a rectangle to make a pom pom. The kind I have came as a set with 3 sizes, 1 1/2", 2", and 3".  I made 1- 1 1/2" pom pom and 1- 2" pom pom for each bunny. Follow the instructions on your pom pom maker or, if using cardboard, wrap several time around the cardboard, tie around the center, and clip loops and trim.

Glue the smaller pom pom (head) onto the larger pom pom (body). You can glue the head either on top of the body to make a sitting bunny, or to the front to make a bunny that is in more of a laying position. Cut two ear shaped pieces out of brown felt (or color to match your yarn), cut 2 slightly smaller pieces out of pink.

Glue the pink ears onto the brown ears. Glue the ears onto the top of the smaller pom pom. Glue googly eyes to the front of the smaller pom pom.
