It is time again for another Team Creative Crafts Collaboration, and not surprisingly the theme this month is pumpkins. I have been in a fall/pumpkin crafting mood lately so this was a perfect theme for me.

One of my favorite pumpkin crafts to make is crocheted pumpkins. I love playing with the different textures created by crochet stitches. I have several different crocheted pumpkin patterns already, but lots of stitches I still want to try out.

I like to choose stitches that are fairly tight and dense, so that the stuffing doesn't show through, and that also have a lot of texture. The Alpine Stitch fit those requirements perfectly. It is a very highly textured stitch and one that I thought would work really well for a pumpkin.

This pumpkin is made by crocheting a tube, then cinching the top and bottom to create the pumpkin shape. A cinnamon stick or small stick is used for the stem. I also added a simple curly vine to finish the pumpkin.

How to Crochet an Alpine Stitch Pumpkin

You will need:

  • Worsted Weight Yarn (Samples made in Red Heart Super Saver in Aran and Frosty Green, and Loops and Threads Impeccable in Pumpkin)
  • H Crochet Hook (5 mm)
  • Cinnamon Stick or Small Stick
  • Polyfil Stuffing
  • Yarn Needle

Instructions:

These pumpkins are made by crocheting a tube, then cinching the top and bottom closed. I made 2 sizes-

Cream: 6" diameter x 3.5" tall
Orange: 4" diameter x 3" tall

But, by adjusting the number of stitches per round and the number of rounds you could easily adjust the size of the pumpkins. You will need to begin with an even number of chains, and end with a single crochet row.

Large Pumpkin (cream)

ch 46, join with sl st to first ch to make a ring

Round 1: ch 1, sc in each stitch around, join with sl st to first sc (46 sc)

Round 2: ch 2 (does not count as a stitch), dc in each st around (46 dc)

Round 3: ch 1, sc in each stitch around, join with sl st to first sc (46 sc)

Round 4: ch 2, [dc in first st, fpdc in the dc 2 rows below the next st (row 2)] repeat around (23 dc, 23 fpdc)

Round 5: ch 1, sc in each stitch around, join with sl st to first sc (46 sc)

Round 6: ch 2, [fpdc in the dc 2 rows below first st, dc in next st] repeat around (23 dc, 23 fpdc)

Round 7: ch 1, sc in each stitch around, join with sl st to first sc (46 sc)

Repeat rounds 4-7 until you have 17 rounds (4-7 2 more times, then 4-5 once more) or until you reach the length you want, just remember your pumpkin will be shorter than the flat tube because you will cinch in the top and bottom

Weave yarn around the bottom and cinch tightly closed, I like to cut a separate piece of yarn, weave it around, cinch it, tie the yarn securely and then pull the ends to the inside of the pumpkin.

Weave yarn around the top (you can use your tail for this) and stuff the pumpkin. Cinch up the top but leave a space large enough to put your stem in the center.

Curly Vine

with green yarn ch 12

turn and work 2 sc in each ch to the end (24 sc)

Finish off and tie around the pumpkin stem or stitch to the top of the pumpkin next to the stem.

Small Pumpkin (orange)

Round 3: ch 1, sc in each stitch around, join with sl st to first sc (36 sc)

Round 4: ch 2, [dc in first st, fpdc in the dc 2 rows below the next st (row 2)] repeat around (18 dc, 18 fpdc)

Round 5: ch 1, sc in each stitch around, join with sl st to first sc (36 sc)

Round 6: ch 2, [fpdc in the dc 2 rows below first st, dc in next st] repeat around (18 dc, 18 fpdc)

Round 7: ch 1, sc in each stitch around, join with sl st to first sc (36 sc)

Repeat rounds 4-7 until you have 15 rounds (2 more times) or until you reach the length you want, just remember your pumpkin will be shorter than the flat tube because you will cinch in the top and bottom
