Since the theme for week 1 is Babies, Kids, and Teens I decided pretty much right away that I wanted to do some kind of plushie. I wanted to make something that would be either related to Christmas or Winter. I thought back to my last winter mini amigurumi crochet along, the Bitty Blizzard Mini Amigurumi Crochet Along. One of my favorite mini amigurumi from that set was the little penguin. It was wearing a little scarf and earmuffs and I thought it turned out really cute. I decided a penguin would be perfect for this project and decided to use that little penguin as inspiration.

I obviously wanted to make this one bigger than the mini version, but based the design off of that one. One of the ways I made it bigger was using bigger yarn and a bigger hook. That alone increased the size quite a bit. But I also changed the pattern to make it even bigger.

I used Bernat Blanket yarn. When I am making stuff with worsted weight yarn I have tons of colors in my stash, but I don't use blanket yarn as often and I didn't want to have to buy a bunch of colors, so I decided to leave the earmuffs off of this version. I think the scarf adds a fun pop of color even without the added earmuffs, and the blanket yarn makes it soft and cuddly

I used the Bernat Blanket Mist-ical yarn for most of the colors, mostly just because that is what I could find the right colors in. The Mist-ical yarn has kind of a splotchy dye effect, their description describes it as a watercolor effect, but it gives some variation to the color of the penguin. I like the way it looks, but you could also make it with a solid color if you prefer that look. I think it would be cute in different colors as well, like a blue or purple penguin instead of black or gray. Since it is made with thick yarn it works up pretty fast, which is nice. There is some sewing involved, the head and body are one piece, the wings, feet, and beak are sewn on. I just tied the scarf around the neck, but you could stitch it in place if you want to make sure it stays in place.

Don't forget to head over to Underground Crafter to check out all the other fun Christmas in July projects that have been, or will be, shared as part of this make along.
