This year it felt like winter was never going to end and spring would never get here, we were having major snow storms into April. But luckily May has finally started to feel more like spring weather and I am loving it, but that does make posting a new hat and scarf pattern this month feel kind of funny, but there is a reason for it.

This month I am excited to be the guest designer for the Scarf of the Month Club (and the Hat of the Month Club coming next week) with Oombawka Design and The Stitchin Mommy. That means that in addition to my scarf pattern, the Harmony Cowl, be sure to also check out their designs for this month, the Lacy Summer Scarf, and the Chelsea Infinity Scarf

Get the PDF pattern for each scarf for free on Ravelry for the next 24 hours (through the end of the day 5/22/23). For this one just add it to your cart and the discounted price (free) will show up in your cart through the end of the promotion! After tomorrow it will still be available for purchase at regular price.

My pattern is the Harmony Cowl. It is a cowl style scarf made with Lion Brand Mandala Ombre, I used the color way Harmony for my sample which is where the name came from, I am terrible at coming up with names.  I am kind of a sucker for ombre and self striping yarns because they make adding the detail of color changes super easy. The nice thing about the ombre yarns is that the color changes are a lot les harsh and kind of just melt into each other better than other self striping yarns.

This cowl uses a combination of puff stitches and crossed double crochet stitches. It also has a border along the top and bottom made of a post stitch ribbing. The matching hat will be released next week.

How to Crochet the Harmony Cowl

Finished Size: about 33" around x 6.5" wide

You will need:

  • 1 cake Lion Brand Mandala Ombre (sample made in Harmony)
  • I crochet hook (5.5 mm)
  • yarn needle
  • scissors

Instructions:

*Note: to adjust size (length) add (to make longer) or subtract (to make shorter) a multiple of 2 from the beginning chain, starting chain must be an even number. To make wider work more repeats of rounds 5 and 6, to make skinnier work fewer repeats.

When making the puff stitches you will be working in between the crossed double crochet stitches, not in the actual stitches like you normally do. Each pair of crossed doubles makes an x shape and you will be working in the space at the top of the x just above where the stitches cross.

Beginning chain does not count as a stitch

Special Stitch

Puff Stitch: [yo, insert hook in st, pull up a loop] 3 times, yo, pull through all 7 loops on the hook
