It has been a while since I have shared a new hat pattern, and I actually have a few hat patterns in the works, including reworking a few of my older hat patterns to include more sizes. But today I have a new hat pattern to share, the Ridgeline Hat. I am sharing this hat pattern as part of the Giftstravaganza Blog Hop.

This is the fourth annual Giftstravaganza Blog Hop with Underground Crafter and it includes 30 days of free crochet patterns for handmade holiday gifts created by dozens of different bloggers. Each pattern is forever free on a blog but you can also grab the PDF version of the daily featured pattern free for 24 hours! This Blog Hop has been going on all month and each week has a different theme. You can visit Underground Crafter to see the previous week's themes and the patterns that have been shared, as well as more details about how you can enter to win lots of fun prizes.

This week is the 4th week and the theme is Gifts for Anyone. I thought a hat would be the perfect project, because who doesn't need a nice warm hat in the winter. It is something that anyone could use. This hat in particular is a very simple design that could work for men, women, and children, and the pattern includes 5 sizes from baby-adult so you really can make one for pretty much anyone on your list.

The Ridgeline Hat uses back post stitches to create raised lines all around the hat running from top to bottom. Around the bottom alternating front and back post stitches are used to create a ribbed edging.

I used Big Twist Value for my hats, I saw that Michaels is now carrying some Big Twist yarns and I saw the blue and green tones that I used for these hats and really like them so I decided to pick them up for this pattern, but other similar weight yarns would work as well. Some of the yarns I have used for my hats include Loops & Threads Impeccable and  Loops & Threads Soft Classic, Red Heart Super Saver, Caron Jumbo, and other similar yarns. There is a crown and height measurement for each size, to ensure that your hat will be the right size be sure to check the measurement of the crown when you finish the last increase round.

On the topic of increases, just a little note about this hat pattern. Each size starts out with 10 double crochet in a magic ring and increases by the same number, so round 2 has 20 double crochet, round 3 has 30 double crochet and so on. Sometimes a full increase is too much to get to the next size up so the last round on some of the sizes has only 4 increases, instead of the full 10. Because the post stitches are spaces out based on the increases this means that on some of the sizes there is not the same number of stitches between all of the post stitch ridges. For example on the 3-6 month size there are 3 stitches between some of the ridges and 4 stitches between others. It is not really noticeable in the finished hat, unless you are looking really closely, but I wanted to be sure to clarify that this is right and the way the pattern is written.

You can leave your hat as is and be done, or add a faux fur pom pom to the top for a fun finish.  My favorite way to add faux fur pom poms is to sew a button inside the hat and use the elastic loop pom poms, then pull the loop inside and wrap around the button. That way it is removable and you can wear it with or without the pom pom or take it off for washing.

The Ridgeline Hat is worked from the top down, starting with a magic ring. Each hat has ridges of back post double crochet (bpdc) running from top to bottom, then finished with a post stitch ribbing, made with alternating front and back post stitches (fpdc, bpdc).

An optional faux fur pom pom can be added at the end. Check out this video for how to attach a faux fur pom pom.
