This year I am doing a series leading up to Christmas of 12 Weeks of Handmade Holiday Gift Ideas. This is week 2 of the 12 weeks. Each week I will be sharing 2 different projects that can be made as holiday gifts- 1 crocheted gift idea, and one that is a different craft, it could be a sewing project, a paper craft, or any other kind of craft. Today's gift idea is the crochet project and this week I made a set of hats in multiple sizes.

I wanted to make a fairly simple hat pattern. I love combining rounds of different stitches to give hats cool textures, but I really wanted to keep this one pretty basic since my goal was something that could be made pretty quick and easy so that you could make as many as you need before Christmas. But, that being said I didn't want to make just a basic double crochet hat, I wanted a little bit of interest and texture to the stitches. So I used a double crochet stitch pattern that was a twist on basic double crochet.
I have used this stitch pattern in a dishcloth in the past and I thought it would be a neat, but also simple, texture for a hat as well. I called the dishcloth the Double Double Dishcloth, but I don't know if the stitch actually has a name. It is essentially a V-stitch, but without the chain in between, which makes it a little less open of a stitch and I like that for projects like a hat.
Normally with a v-stitch you will work a (dc, ch 1, dc) into the ch space of the previous row. With this stitch you work 2 dc in-between the 2 dc of the previous row. So the same space as where the ch 1 would be in a normal v-stitch.
This hat is made top down with the top section of increase rounds made in double crochet, then the main body of the hat made of the double crochet/v-stitch variation, then it is finished off with a post stitch ribbing. It is a simple pattern that works well for any size or gender. You can add an optional faux fur pom pom for a fun finish, or just leave it plain.
I made 5 sizes, which is pretty standard for most of my hat patterns, Adult, Child, Toddler, Baby 6-12 Months, and Baby 3-6 Months. I used Red Heart Super Saver Ombre to make these hats, any similar medium weight yarn will work.
How to Crochet the Merry Hat
You will need:
- medium weight acrylic (samples made in Red Heart Super Saver Ombre in colors Green Apple, and Anemone)
- I crochet hook (5.5 mm)
- yarn needle
- scissors
- optional: faux fur pom pom
Instructions:
Gauge:
4 rounds of dc (40 dc) = 4.5"
Note: the chain at the beginning or the round counts as a first stitch during the patterned section of the hat, but not at the beginning increase rounds, or at the end when making the ribbing section.
The double crochet stitches in the patterned section are worked in between 2 double crochet stitches from the previous round, not into the top of the stitches.
