5 Little Monsters: Easy Crocheted Sweeper Cover

Easy Crocheted Sweeper Cover

Since today is Earth Day I thought it would be nice to share a pattern for something that was eco-friendly in some way. I immediately thought of reusable crochet items that replace disposable things that we use everyday, things like dishcloths, washcloths, and face scrubbies. Since I already have patterns for all of those things I decided to do a sweeper cover (for sweepers like a Swiffer).

There are a lot of different patterns out there for sweeper covers ranging from highly textured stitch patterns to super basic and simple patterns, just like you find with dishcloth patterns. I chose to keep mine as simple and basic as I could. Part of my reason for this is that different brands of sweepers may be different sizes and I wanted a pattern that could be easily adapted to fit any sweeper, all you need to do is take a couple of measurements.

The cover is made of half double crochet stitches. The whole thing is made in one piece that is folded over and stitched along the sides to make the pockets that the sweeper fits into.

It is a super quick and easy project, great for using up cotton yarn. Instead of buying disposable pads you can whip up a couple crocheted covers, use, wash, and reuse.

How to Crochet an Easy Sweeper Cover

Finished size: approx. 10" x 5" as written, but can be adapted to fit other sizes

You will need:

  • 1 ball worsted weight cotton yarn
  • H crochet hook
  • scissors

Instructions:

The first thing you will want to do is measure the bottom of your sweeper to determine how large your cover needs to be. I used a Swiffer and the bottom of it is 10" x 4.5". You want your cover to cover the bottom plus wrap a couple of inches on each side. My finished piece before folding the edges in measured approximately 15" x 4.75".

Because the whole piece is made of half double crochet stitches it is easy to adjust the size to meet your needs.

*beginning ch does not count as a stitch

Ch 52

Row 1: hdc in 3rd stitch, and each stitch to the end (50 hdc)

Row 2-12: ch 2, hdc in each stitch to the end (50 hdc)

Finish off, cut yarn

Fold the short edges in 9 stitches on each side (count 9 stitches from the side and fold there, repeat on both sides)

sc along the long edge working through the two layers of folded edge for the first 9 stitches, then 14 stitches in the middle (single layer), and the last 9 stitches through the folded layer on the other side (total of 32 sc)

Repeat along the other edge

Finish off, weave in all ends

Put on your sweeper by putting the ends into the pockets made by the folded edges.
