crocheted snowy owl with Hogwarts scarf

This week I am joining several other bloggers in a Creative Crafts Blog Hop that is Harry Potter themed! I love Harry Potter and have shared Harry Potter projects on my blog before so when I was asked if I wanted to participate there was no hesitation, I absolutely wanted to join in. I had already planned on sharing some Harry Potter crafts this month so it fit perfectly into my schedule. All week long different people will be sharing Harry Potter crafts and today is my turn (along with several others, click the picture below to see more).

I have wanted to make a crocheted Hedwig for a while now and decided this was the perfect opportunity to do it. Or it can just be a snowy owl if you prefer, but when I see a snowy owl I always think of Hedwig.

To make her look even more like she is from Harry Potter I decided to make an optional, removable Gryffindor scarf, I mean, obviously I know that Hedwig doesn't actually wear a scarf but I thought it turned it from what could just be a Snowy Owl, to that is definitely Harry's Owl. Plus, I thought it just made it that much cuter. The scarf just pulls over the head and can easily be taken on and off.

I have made little mini owls before and thought of just making one of those white instead of other colors to turn it into sort of a snowy owl, but then I decided I wanted a bigger stuffed animal size Hedwig. She still isn't huge, only about 7" tall, but big enough to play with, or to display.

How to Crochet Hedwig with a Removable Scarf

Finished size approx. 7" tall

You will need:

Instructions:

The owl is mad in 4 pieces, the head and body, 2 wings, and a beak. The head and body are worked in one piece starting at the top of the head and working down. The beak and wings are made separately and stitched on at the end. The head/body and wings all begin with a magic ring and are worked in the round in a spiral. Use a stitch marker to help you keep track of beginning/end of rounds.

Wings

Make 2

You will make most of the wing with white yarn but work some stitches with black yarn to make the little spots on the wings. You can either do this randomly on your own, or I will make note of which stitches in each round I made black and you can follow that. When switching colors I like to switch by working the last stitch of the first color all the way to the last pull through, then instead of finishing the stitch in the first color pull up the new color so that the new color is on your hook as you start the new stitch.

Round 1: in mr, ch 1, 6 sc, (6 sc)
Round 2: 2 sc in each stitch (12 sc)
Round 3:1 sc in each stitch (12 sc)
Round 4: [2 sc in first stitch, 1 sc in next] repeat around (18 sc)
Round 5: *work stitches 2 and 3 of this round in black* 1 sc in each stitch (18 sc)
Round 6: * work stitch 8 of this round in black* [2 sc in first stitch, 1 sc in next 2 stitches] repeat around (24 sc)
Round 7: *work stitches 2 and 6  of this round in black* 1 sc in each stitch (24 sc)
Round 8: 1 sc in each stitch (24 sc)
Round 9: *work stitches 5, 9 and 10 of this round in black* 1 sc in each stitch (24 sc)
Round 10: 1 sc in each stitch (24 sc)
Round 11: *work stitch 8 of this round in black* 1 sc in each stitch (24 sc)
Round 12: *work stitch 4 of this round in black* [sc2tog, 2 sc] repeat around (18 sc)
Round 13: [sc2tog, 1 sc] repeat around (12 sc)

Finish off and cut yarn leaving long tail for sewing

Stitch wings to side of body

Beak

with black yarn make 1

ch 4
sl st in first sc from hook, sc in next, hdc in next, dc in next

finish off and cut yarn leaving long tail for sewing

stitch beak to head, with the top edge (dc) between the eyes

Scarf

I worked the scarf in alternating rows of half double crochet. I did not want to weave in a bunch of ends for a scarf for a stuffed animal so I just carried the yarn across the rows, working my stitches over it.

You will make 2 pieces for the scarf and stitch them together

start with red
ch 5
Row 1: hdc in 3rd ch and the next 2 to the end, switch to gold
Row 2: ch 2, turn, hdc across, switch to red

Repeat rows 1 and 2 until you have 26 rows (or until you can wrap the scarf around the owl's neck and touch the 2 ends

Make another piece repeating rows 1 and 2 until you have 6 rows

Take the long piece and stitch the two short ends together making a circle

Stitch one short end or the  short piece to the the top edge of the front of the circle scarf (to make the piece hanging down in the front)

Weave in all ends and pull the scarf over the head of the owl, it should be easy to take on and off. If you want to secure it so it stays on you can add a few stitches to hold it in place.

This was a fun project to make, I hope you liked it too. Be sure to go check out all of the other fun Harry Potter Crafts this week!
