5 Little Monsters: Crocheted Dice or Trinket Bags 3 Ways

Crocheted Dice or Trinket Bags 3 Ways

A few years ago I shared a new crochet hat pattern of mine on Facebook. In the comments someone shared how they used that pattern with a thinner yarn and turned it into a little dice bag. It turned out really cool and I have kind of wanted to try making one ever since.

I looked on Facebook to see if I could find that post, but I honestly can't remember which hat pattern it was and if it was shared in a group or on my own page. I tried searching for it several different ways with no luck.

But I finally decided to take that idea and turn it into a pattern. I changed a few things up from the hat patterns that I based this project on, but using the same stitches. I chose to use two different hat patterns for the basis of my dice/trinket bags, that were very similar. Then I also added another design that used a similar row pattern as the other two, but isn't based on a hat that I have made. I'm thinking there will be a new hat pattern in the future though.

The hat patterns I chose to base the bags off of are the String of Beads Hat, and the Criss Cross Hat. Both of these patterns use half double crochet in the third loop stitches in alternated with rounds of another stitch. In the String of Beads pattern it is the bead stitch, and in the Criss Cross pattern it is crossed double crochet.

The third bag design was inspired by those two patterns, but I replaced that round of stitches, the bead stitch or crossed double crochet, with a round of plain double crochet. It is probably the simplest design of the three, but still has a lot of texture and visual interest.

I wanted to make the bags out of thinner yarn than I normally use, the hats are all made with worsted weight, and I had a couple of balls of sport weight yarn that were left over from other projects that I thought would be perfect to use. They were my "fancy" yarns, hand-dyed wool that is more expensive than the yarn that I normally use. I had gotten them for a specific project, they had been sent to me to review, but I had some left over after the projects were finished. I didn't necessarily have enough left to make a big project and so the balls just sat in my yarn stash. I didn't really know what to do with them, but they were beautiful yarns, so I wanted to save them for something. This seemed like the perfect time to use them.

I did make a couple of bags with a sport weight cotton yarn first, but I felt like the wool let the stitches shine a little better. The cotton was also obviously a thicker sport weight than the wool yarns that I used because they came out a little bigger. The good part about that is that as a little bag it doesn't have to be a specific size, unlike a hat. The size of the yarn you use will definitely affect the final size of the bag. I made a sample to show the difference when made with worsted weight yarn. It just makes a little bit bigger bag.

I think the little bags turned out really cute, and it was a fun way to use some of the nice yarn I had been saving. And you could use these small bags for anything, not just dice. They would hold any small trinkets you want. You could throw one in your purse to hold your change or other small items that get lost in the bottom. You could use them as little gift bags to hold a small gift. Anything you want.

How to Crochet Dice or Trinket Bags- 3 Patterns

Finished Size approx. 5" tall and 4" across when laid flat

You will need:

  • sport weight yarn in desired color, sample made with:
    • Manos del Uruguay Feliz, Provence (double crochet)
    • Delicious Yarns Swirl Sport, Gummy Bear (crossed doubles)
    • Delicious Yarns Swirl Sport, Guava (bead stitch)
  • G crochet hook
  • yarn needle
  • scissors

Instructions:

All bags begin with a magic ring. Along the top is a round of double crochet with chain spaces to make the eyelet to thread the drawstring through. The drawstring is a chain that is threaded through and connected at the end to make a loop.

The finished size of the bags will depend on the size of your yarn, the ones made with sport weight wool turned out 5" tall and 4" across when laid flat. The bag made with Red Heart Super Saver (worsted weight) and an H hook (I sized up to use a hook that worked better with the yarn weight, but probably should have gone up to an I) turned out closer to 7" tall and 5" across when laid flat. If you choose to use a different yarn just know that it will affect the finished size of the bag and be sure to adjust the hook size accordingly.

All of the bags use a Half Double Crochet in the Third Loop technique, however it is a single crochet stitch being worked in the third loop, aka not the top two loops that you normally work through but the loop or bar behind them on the back side of the stitch, this pushes the top of the stitch forward and creates a raised row of what looks like sideways v's.
