It is Day 4 of the Book Inspired Craft Week, and today I am choosing a book from my very favorite genres when I was a kid. And this book was one of my favorites, it is called Snow Treasure.

When I was a kid I loved historical fiction, I still do but now I read more of a variety of genres. As a kid I absolutely hated anything that would be considered fantasy and never read it. I wanted to read stories based on historical events, different times, based on true stories, or that at least realistically could have happened. One time period I really loved reading about was World War 2. I'm not sure exactly what it was that I found so fascinating about that time, except that I think it was long enough before I was born that it was very much in the past, but also during the lifetime of my grandparents, people that I knew. I even knew some of my great grandparents who were not only alive during world war 2, but fought in the war. I think that made it even more interesting to me. For me it was a time in history, but for people I knew and loved it was actually part of their life.

Another thing I love about stories in that time is the kind of "ordinary hero" stories. The regular people coming together to help each other, often in secret, to save lives, protect families, and just do the right thing. And as a kid I especially loved reading stories about kids doing those things.

That is what the book Snow Treasure is. It is the story of a group of kids in Norway as German occupation of Norway is beginning. They need to move gold bullion out of Norway before the Germans get ahold of it. They come up with a plan but it requires Peter and his friends to help. They are able to move tons of gold bricks right under the noses of the German soldiers.

Since the story is set in Norway in the winter (or at least at a time when there is still snow on the ground), and one of the major parts of the story involves children sledding and building snowmen they had to have been bundled up in winter clothing. Because of that I decided I would make some warm winter hats as my project to go along with this book. I named it the Riswyk Hat after the fictional town in Norway where the story takes place.

The hat is a variation of my standard hat pattern that I use as the basis of most of my hats. The difference is that this hat uses a super bulky weight yarn so the stitch count changes a little, and it works up super fast. The super bulky yarn, big hook, and simple pattern combine to make a hat that you can easily make in less than an hour. I finished them off with faux fur pom poms on top. The pattern comes in 3 sizes- toddler, child, and adult.
