It is Friday again, so time for another Friday Five. I haven't posted at all since last Friday because it has been a busy week for my family and I have been focused on spending time with them. My oldest son left on a 2 year mission for our church a couple of days ago so the past week has been busy packing, preparing for him to leave, doing a few last things as a family before he is gone for 2 years. But like I mentioned last week I have so many fall projects to share, as well as Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas projects, that I don't want to miss any more weeks of Friday Five. For today I have chosen a theme that is not really halloween specific, but it could definitely be used to help make halloween costumes. Today's five patterns are crocheted hats that can be used for Halloween costumes, or you can just make them for a fun hat to wear all fall/winter!
Halloween Costume Hats
1- Unicorn Hat with Flowers
First up, we have a unicorn hat with flowers around the horn. I made this hat for my daughter several years ago to wear as part of a halloween costume. She was obsessed with unicorns at this point and she wore the hat paired with a white shirt, and I believe gold pants, and I think we added a tail of some kind as well. But, she went on to wear that hat for the rest of the season. It was a simple addition to a halloween costume, but also a functional hat for all winter.
2- Baby Ghost Costume
Next is a little baby ghost costume that includes a little hat with a twisty point on top. It is a just a simple white hat, but paired with a white onesie with a ghost face and little white pants it makes the perfect simple costume for a little baby. Cute, comfy, and warm.
3- Baby Bear Hat
This little bear hat was not made as part of a Halloween costume, just a super cute little baby hat, but I think it could totally be used as a Halloween costume. The pattern includes 3 baby sizes, from newborn to 12 months. Pair it with a same color onesie, pajamas, or little sweat suit for a cute and cuddly little baby bear.
For a similar but slightly larger size when my youngest daughter (whose nickname is bear) was a toddler we made her a little care bear costume by making a pink hat with bear ears and stitching a felt design on the stomach of a pink shirt.
4- Post Stitch Pumpkin Baby Hat
Another little baby option that pairs a baby shirt and hat together is this little pumpkin. The hat is 0-3 month size and it has ridges made with post stitches, as well as a little stem and curly vine on top.
5- Toddler Monkey Hat
The last hat I am including on my list is another that wasn't made intended to be used as a costume, just a fun toddler hat. This one is a little monkey hat. My son wore it throughout the winter, in this picture we were actually at the zoo and he is sitting in front of the monkey enclosure. It is only in a toddler size, but you could easily add the ears to a basic hat of any size.
Crocheted hats can be a great base for a costume, and the great thing is that they can add warmth too if you live in a place that is cold on halloween. It always stinks when your cool costume is covered up by a coat, but this way your costume is actually helping keep you warm. These are just a few examples of hats that can be used for costumes. I have also make bunny hats, dog hats, monster hats, dinosaur hats with spikes, a little lamb hat, so many different things, even a Princess Leia wig hat. And they all pretty much start with a basic hat, then you can add ears, spikes, buns, faces, or whatever elements will give you the look you need!
Come back next week for a new theme and another 5 projects. Leave a comment if there is a theme you would like to see!
