5 Little Monsters: Thick and Thin Stripes Crochet Hat

Thick and Thin Stripes Crochet Hat

One of the very first crochet patterns that I published on my blog was a little newborn striped hat that had an anchor appliqué on it. It was made with alternating rounds of single and double crochet to make thick and thin stripes.

As I was thinking about patterns that would work well with variegated yarns, to be part of my Variegated Yarn Friendly Series of hat patterns and this pattern immediately came to mind and this pattern is based on that early pattern.

Just like the Puff Stitch Stripe this hat is available in 5 sizes, 3-6 months, 6-12 months, toddler, child, and adult.

I decided to show a few variations in color placement. You can use variegated yarn for the thin stripes (like the 3-6 month hat white/red variegated, the toddler gray/pink and blue variegated, and the child white/blue and purple variegated).

You can use the variegated for the thick stripes (example 6-12 month white/blue variegated).

You can also choose which color you want the ribbing to be. The basic pattern has the ribbing the same color as the thin stripes (shown in all hats except child size white/ blue and purple variegated). I originally design the pattern this way to give more contrast, and for the most part I like it that way but sometimes if your thin stripes are variegated yarn it may look a little muddled. I didn't love the way the variegated ribbing turned out on the gray hat so on the next size up I chose to make the ribbing the same white as the thick stripes. It is totally personal preference and you can easily do it either way. All you need to do is add an extra thin round before you start the ribbing. 1 round of single crochet is not tall enough to make a big difference in the height of the hat, but it allows you to switch colors so you can make the ribbing the opposite color.

Also, to show what it looks like in 2 solid colors I made the adult size sample in black and white solid colored yarn.

How to Crochet a Thick and Thin Stripes Hat

You will need:

  • medium weight yarn in 2 colors (samples use a combination of Red Heart Super Saver, Red Heart with Love, All Things You Essential Acrylic, and other similar weight yarn)
  • I crochet hook (5.5mm)
  • scissors
  • yarn needle
  • optional: faux fur pom pom

Instructions:

Each size is written so that the ribbing is the same color as the thin stripes (Color B). If you would like the ribbing the same color as the thick stripes (Color A), like the child size sample, add 1 more round of single crochet with Color B before ribbing, then switch to Color A for the ribbing.

All sizes begin with a magic ring.
