When I thought about what kind of pattern I could make that would work as a gift for anyone, I immediately thought of hats. They are one of my favorite winter projects to make and everybody needs them regardless of age or gender. So I set out to design a hat that would work for everyone and was available in several sizes.
The result was the Mossy Path Hat. I love hats with lots of texture so I used my favorite hat designing style that I have used on lots of hat patterns in the past and used rows of half double crochet worked in the third loop to separate textured sections of the design. For this hat I chose to use the moss stitch in between my rows of hdc. The moss stitch is one of my favorite stitches to use. I have always loved the subtle texture it gives, and it is such a simple stitch.
The pattern is available in 9 sizes from Preemie to Adult. The included sizes are Preemie, Newborn, 3-6 Months, 6-12 Months, Toddler, Child, Teen/Adult Small, Adult Medium, and Adult Large. So there should be a size to fit just about everyone.
How to Crochet the Mossy Path Hat
You will need :
- medium weight yarn in desired color (samples made with Red Heart Super Saver, and Loops and Threads Impeccable)
- I crochet hook (5.5mm)
- yarn needle
- scissors
- faux fur pom pom (optional)
- button and needle and thread if using an elastic loop pompom
Instructions:
Each hat is started with a magic ring, beginning chains do not count as a stitch unless specified.
The number of double crochet stitches used in the beginning increase rounds vary by size (some use multiples of 10, others 11, and some 12) so be sure to pay attention to that if making multiple sizes.
I used my hat templates that I shared here a week or so ago to help size the hats, you can cut those out and use them as a guide, or I will put the crown diameter measurement and length for each hat. Measure the diameter of the crown after the final double crochet increase round to check your gauge.
If you are using a faux fur pom pom my favorite way to attach them is to use the pom poms with elastic loops and sew a large-ish button (about 3/4"-1") to the top center inside of the hat, then pull the loop inside of the hat and loop it around the button to secure, a crochet hook helps pull the loop through easily. This way the pom pom is easily removed for washing, or just to have the option to wear with or without the pom pom.
