A couple days ago was Groundhog's Day and apparently Punxsutawney Phil says we will have 6 more weeks of winter, but here in Utah it feels like winter hasn't even started yet so it doesn't feel very likely here. Since it hasn't felt like winter I feel like I have had a hard time getting excited about making winter stuff. But I have made some hats that I want to share, starting with this pattern that I am posting today.

This hat is made with 2 colors, and I used one yarn for my contrasting color on all of the hats. I used Red Heart Super Saver in Retro Stripe because I bought some for the little hat in my Bitty Blizzard Crochet Along, used a tiny amount of it and still had most of a jumbo size skein left. I made 5 hats in different sizes using it as the contrasting color and I still have most of a jumbo skein left, so the plan to use it up didn't work that well. I did start another project using it that I think will be fun, so I guess it is ok. I paired the retro stripe with white for some of the hats and charcoal for the others. I really liked how the bright pastels paired with the dark charcoal, but it also worked well with the white. It was kind of fun to see how each hats stripes were different colors, apparently I started at a point that was very blue/green heavy since only one hat really ended up with all of the pink.

The stitch that I used for these hats is the lemon peel stitch, which is made by alternating single and double crochet stitches, but when you work it in 2 colors, alternating colors each round, you end up with a sort of houndstooth pattern. The way that the short and tall stitches interact gives you a similar look to houndstooth.

I added an optional faux fur pom pom to the top of the hats. My typical method to add a detachable pom pom is to use the pom poms with elastic loops and sew a button on the inside of the hat. Then I pull the loop through to the inside of the hat and loop it around the button. That way it can be taken off if desired.

For this hat I did something similar, but instead of sewing a button to the hat I used something new I found, new to me at least. I bought some pom pom buttons which are a little disc with notches in the sides. Instead of sewing it on you just pull the loop to the inside, wrap it around the notches in the disc and it holds the pom pom in place. I got a big pack of wooden ones and they worked great and were pretty inexpensive and an easy no sew way to have a removable pom pom.

I made 5 sizes, which is the same as most of my hat patterns, Adult, Child, Toddler, Baby 6-12 Months, and Baby 3-6 Months.
