A few years ago I made a little Christmas Gnome with long striped legs and when I made it I thought it would be fun to make in different colors for different holidays. Like I said, that was a few years ago and I never did anything more with it, but this year I decided to make a little St. Patrick's Day gnome.

I made this little gnome using basically the same pattern as the Christmas Gnome, the only thing that I changed besides the colors was the arms. The arms in the original gnome were really short and skinny and when I went back and looked at the pictures I didn't love the way they looked so I made them a little bigger and longer this time.

The little St. Patrick's Day version of the gnome is made in two shades of green. I used a darker green for the body and a lighter green for the hat, as well as for the stripes on the legs. I also used an orange for the beard instead of the white beard on the original.

Adding a weighted base to the bottom of your gnome is not absolutely necessary, but the weight helps the gnome sit really well on a shelf. I like to use weighted bases on projects that I make with the intent of sitting on a shelf rather than being played with. My favorite way to make a weighted base is to use a nylon and add some weighted stuffing beads to the end, it doesn't take a lot, and then tie it off and cut off the excess. Then just stick that in the bottom of the body before adding stuffing.

The little gnome sits about 6" tall, only counting the body and the hat. The legs are long and can sit out in front of the gnome or hang off the edge of the shelf.

How to Crochet a St. Patrick's Day Gnome

You will need:

Instructions:

All pieces are crocheted beginning with a magic ring

Prepare the weighted insert for your base by adding some weighted stuffing beads to a nylon and tying it closed or cutting a circle of fabric and stitching a running stitch around the edge and pulling to make a little pouch, fill with beads, pull closed and stitch to secure. You can see more detailed instructions here:

Assembly

Use the tails of the yarn you tied the top of the beard to attach (either sew or tie) the beard to the front top edge of the body.

Sew the nose on top of the beard.

Sew the arms to the side of the body along the top edge.

Stuff the hat, then pull down over the top edge of the body, curving over the nose, and sew in place.

Stuff the feet lightly but leave the legs unstuffed, sew the legs to the bottom of the body.
