Every year before Valentine's Day I like to share some printable valentine cards that can be paired with inexpensive little gifts. I always choose some small, non-food items, and try to keep them pretty cheap so that it is something affordable to get for an entire class. My goal is to keep it under $1 per item, but many times it is way cheaper than that.
The reason that I like to do this is because 7 years ago one of my daughters was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. As holidays came around that involved lots of candy I realized how hard that can be for kids like her, as well as kids with allergies or other needs. Even though with T1D my daughter could technically eat the candy it was a little more complicated than that for her and she typically would choose not too. When given the choice between a candy option and a non-food option she would choose the non-food every time. It made me realize that there are probably lots of kids in similar positions whether it be due to something like diabetes, or other reasons like food allergies and intolerances, or even things like autism and kids with sensory needs that may struggle with textures or unfamiliar treats.
And to be honest as I started making more of an effort to have alternatives to candy available and paid more attention to what the kids would choose, I found that often most of the kids will choose a little toy over a piece of candy. It ends up being something all of the kids like, so it is good for everyone.
I have a couple of different valentine designs for this year and I am a little later than I like to get them out for this year since Valentine's Day is only a few days away, but if you need something sooner I have been sharing these for several years and have a lot of printable Valentines available.
For this first set of cards I chose a robot theme. My 9 year old helped me choose the themes for these Valentines and he thought robots would be fun. There are 4 different designs and they are all on one sheet, so each sheet you print will have 4 cards on it, 1 of each of the 4 designs. They say- "I like you a bot", "Best Bots Forever", "UR GR8", and "Beep Beep, Boop Boop, UR Awesome".
I gave my son a few options to choose from for robot toys and he chose some little robot fidget toys, they don't totally match the card designs, but they are fun to play with. There are quite a few fun and inexpensive options that you can choose from to pair with the robot valentines. Here are a few ideas that I found: Robot Fidget Toys, Keychain Robot Pop Fidgets, Robot Stickers, Mini Robot Figures, and Robot Bubble Wands. I'm sure you can find even more options, but those were a few I thought kids would like that fit in my price parameters.
