A few weeks ago I went to Michaels and saw that they had a bunch of new yarn, including several new types and colors of Caron Cakes. One that I thought looked really fun and a perfect color way for spring was one of the Caron Upside Down Cakes in the color Candy Floss.
The Upside Down Cakes is a self striping cake, just like most of the Caron Cakes, but instead of just changing through colors it repeats them before they change to the next one. For example if it changes from pink to orange to yellow instead of just running through those colors it would be something like pink, orange, pink, orange, yellow, orange, yellow, green, yellow, green, etc. So it is a little bit different than other self striping yarns.
The Candy Floss color way is kind of a bright, springy, rainbow. The colors are pink, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple. I felt like the bright colors definitely had an Easter and Spring vibe, so I picked one up to make a spring project.
I had a few ideas for what I wanted to make, but after trying a couple of things I really wasn't loving how it was turning out. Self striping yarn can be really tricky to work with and sometimes it doesn't work great with certain stitches or projects, and I felt like that was the case with the first couple things I tried. I was honestly pretty bummed because I was so excited about making a spring project with the yarn. Then I thought with Easter coming up maybe it would be fun to make a big stuffed bunny. The bright stripes are kind of crazy but also kind of fun, and the colors felt perfect for Easter. I made it a little bigger than I usually make my stuffed animals, especially since I make a lot of mini amigurumi.
I wanted to make it a 1 skein project, so I made it as big as I felt like I could while not needing more than 1 skein. The finished bunny is about 12" tall sitting, and about 17" tall including the legs. It has big floppy ears hanging down from its head.
I used a little bit of shaping on the head by adding decreases above the nose, and then I used yarn and a needle to pull the eyes in just a little bit after it was finished. I used safety eyes and nose for the face, and finished it with some black yarn embroidery to make a mouth and little eyebrows.
This colorful little bunny would be so fun for an Easter gift, or anytime. And if you don't like the colorful stripes I think it would look really cute in a solid color as well.
