Today is technically Day 3 of the Book Inspired Craft Week, but I actually missed getting yesterday's pattern up so it is actually only Day 2. I had some other stuff come up yesterday that took longer than anticipated and used up the time I planned to finish up editing a video I needed to go along with the project. So I will push that off to another day, normally my Book Inspired Craft Week runs Monday-Friday, but we might be adding a project on Saturday to make up for the skipped one, I will find some time to get it posted. But for now let's take a look at today's book and project.
The book that I chose for today is a children's classic that I am sure everyone knows, it is Make Way For Ducklings by Robert McCloskey. It is a story of a little duck family so I decided to make some soft and cuddly crocheted ducks.
The ducks I made don't look anything like the ducks in the book's illustrations because those are much more realistic style ducks and mine are crochet plushie style, but I still thought it would be a fun project to go along with the book.
I made a Mama Duck and a Baby Duck, they are made in the same style, but the Mama is just bigger than the Baby. The ducks in the book were a family of mallards so I made the Mama Duck out of a brown fuzzy yarn that had 2 shades of brown and I thought it worked well for the mottled brown of a female mallard. For the baby I used the same fuzzy yarn but in yellow. I used the same yellow plus an orangey color for the bills and feet. The yarn I used was Big Twist Fluffy and I got it from Michaels, you could use a different plush yarn but it may change the size and you may need to adjust your hook size. I only picked out yarn colors for the ducks I made but if you wanted to make the dad duck they do have a green you could used for the head, but not a white for the ring around the neck, so you would need to find a comparable size of yarn in white for that.
When I started designing the pattern I started with the baby and as I was working on it I realized that it was very similar to the Mini Amigurumi Duck pattern from my Farm Animal Mini Amigurumi Crochet Along. So I ended up deciding that instead of rewriting the pattern I would just use that one, so this little baby duck is exactly the same as that one, except that it is made of jumbo yarn with a larger hook so it turned out a lot bigger. Then I used that as the base for the mama duck pattern but added a few rounds to make it bigger.
How to Crochet Mama and Baby Duck Plushies
Finished Size: Baby about 6.5" tall, Mama about 11" tall
You will need:
- Big Twist Fluff yarn in 2 colors per duck- body color and beak/feet color (Samples made with Mojave Desert, Pineapple Slice, and Canyon Sunset)
- L crochet hook (8 mm)
- 2- 12 mm safety eyes for baby duck
- 2-14 mm safety eyes for mama duck
- Polyfil fiberfill
- yarn needle
- stitch markers
- scissors
Instructions:
The body and head are made in one piece, the other pieces are made separately and sewn on. You can begin with a magic ring if you prefer, I personally don't like using a magic ring with really thick, fluffy yarns like this, they can be very hard to tighten and the tail can pull apart. If you do use a magic ring tighten it most of the way after only one or two stitches so that you don't have to pull it a lot at the end. In this pattern I chose instead to chain 2 to start and work all of my first round stitches into the first chain and pulled the tail to tighten it up when I was done. This works in basically the same way as a magic ring and either way will work, I just found this to be a little easier method with this yarn. Also, I wanted my ducks to be soft and squishable so I did not stuff them as firmly as I do when making amigurumi out of worsted weight yarn. You want enough that they will hold their shape well, but not super packed in.
