The sedge stitch is a pretty crochet stitch that is made with a simple 1 row repeat using 3 basic stitches- single crochet, half double crochet, and double crochet. It is a solid stitch (not full of holes), and gives some texture to the finished project, a little bit of a puffy texture. It is great for a number of projects and I have used it in a few different patterns.

How to Crochet the Sedge Stitch

Sample made with worsted weight yarn (Red Heart Super Saver) and an I (5.25mm) crochet hook

Starting Chain:

begin by chaining a multiple of 3 + 2

for my small sample in the video and the picture above I started with a chain of 14 (3x4 = 12 +2 = 14)

Row 1:

sc in 2nd ch from hook, (1 hdc, 1 dc) in same stitch, [skip 2 ch, (sc, hdc, dc) in next ch] repeat until you have 3 ch left, skip 2, sc in last ch

Row 2:

ch 1, turn, (sc, hdc, dc) in first stitch (last sc from previous row), [skip 2 stitches, (sc, hdc, dc) in next stitch] repeat until there are 3 stitches remaining, sk 2 sts, sc in last st
