September Bear of the Month: Football Bear

September 1st can only mean one thing, it is time for another Bear of the Month! September was actually kind of a harder one for me because there aren't really any holidays in September. But it is the start of fall so I figured I would do something fall related. I tossed around a few different ideas that I was considering, which is pretty much the same thing that happens every month because I always have a hard time deciding. One thing that starts up in the fall, and specifically in September, is football, and I thought a little Football Bear would be pretty cute. So that is what I decided to go with. This month's bear is the Football Bear. 


I decided to make my little football bear wearing a helmet and holding a football. I thought about trying to make a little jersey, but making clothes like that for the bears is not my favorite thing to do so I decided not to go that route. I figured the helmet and football should be enough to tell what it is. 


Whether it is high school, college, or NFL, I thought a little football bear would be easy to customize to your favorite team by choosing a color for the helmet. I went with a red helmet with a white stripe for our families favorite college team, but you could easily switch up the colors to represent any team you want.


The bear is the same pattern that I use for all or the bears. I wanted to use a lighter brown shade for my bear this month because I wanted to use a dark brown for the football and I didn't want the brown of the football to blend in with the body of the bear. So I ended up using the same brown as I had used for the Liberty Bear, Big Twist Value in Camel.


I wanted a dark brown for the football so I used Red Heart Super Saver in Coffee with White for the details. The Helmet could be made in any color to represent whatever color you want it to. I used Red Heart Super Saver in Hot Red and White for mine. 


With September done that means we are three-quarters of the way through the year, 9 bears done and only 3 more to go! 



How to Crochet a Football Bear

The body and head are made in one piece, the other pieces are made separately and sewn on. Some pieces are made beginning with a magic ring (mr), others begin with a chain, the beginning of each piece will indicate which it starts with. 


Body/Head

Make 1 with bear color yarn, beginning with a magic ring

Round 1: in mr, ch 1, 6 sc (6 sc)
Round 2: 2 sc in each st (12 sc)
Round 3: [2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next st] repeat around (18 sc)
Round 4: [2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next 2 sts] repeat around (24 sc)
Round 5: [2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next 3 sts] repeat around (30 sc)
Rounds 6-12: 1 sc in each st (30 sc)
Round 13:  [sc2tog, 1 sc in next 3 sts] repeat around (24 sc)
Rounds 14-15: 1 sc in each st (24 sc)
Round 16: sc2tog, repeat around (12 sc)

Begin stuffing body, next round begins the head portion 

Round 17: 2 sc in each st (24 sc)
Round 18: [2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next 3 sts] repeat around (30 sc)
Round 19: [2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next 4 sts] repeat around (36 sc)
Rounds 20-25: 1 sc in each st (36 sc)
Round 26: [sc2tog, 1 sc in next 4 sts] repeat around (30 sc)

Insert eyes between rounds 23 and 24, about 5-6 stitches apart, begin stuffing head and continue to stuff as needed as you finish closing up the head

Round 27: [sc2tog, 1 sc in next 3 sts] repeat around (24 sc)
Round 28: [sc2tog, 1 sc in next 2 sts] repeat around (18 sc)
Round 29: [sc2tog, 1 sc in next st] repeat around (12 sc)
Round 30: sc2tog, repeat around (6 sc)

Finish off and cut yarn, use tail to weave around opening to close, weave in end

Muzzle

Make 1 with bear color yarn, beginning with magic ring

Round 1: in mr, ch 1, 6 sc (6 sc)
Round 2: [3 sc in first st, 1 sc in next 2] repeat (10 sc)
Round 3: [2 sc in each of the next 3 sts, 1 sc in next 2 sts] repeat (16 sc)
Round 4: 1 sc in first 2 sts, 2 sc in each of next 2 sts, 1 sc in next 6 sts, 2 sc in each of next 2 sts, 1 sc in next 4 sts (20 sc)
Round 5: 1 sc in each st (20 sc)

Finish off and cut yarn leaving long tail for sewing

Add safety nose to the muzzle, and you can at this point use embroidery floss to embroider a mouth if desired but I chose not to, if you do just make a line coming down from the nose and then branching off to each side.

Sew the muzzle to the face just below the eyes, adding stuffing behind it 

Ears

Make 2 with bear color yarn, beginning with magic ring

Round 1: in mr, ch 1, 6 sc (6 sc)
Round 2: 2 sc in each st (12 sc)
Round 3: [2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next 3] repeat around (15 sc)
Round 4: 1 sc in each st (15 sc)

Finish off and cut yarn leaving long tail for sewing

Set aside to sew on after adding the hat

Arms

Make 2 with bear color yarn, beginning with magic ring

Round 1: in mr, ch 1, 6 sc (6 sc)
Round 2: 2 sc in each st (12 sc)
Round 3: [2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next 3 sts] repeat around (15 sc)
Round 4: 1 sc in each st (15 sc)
Round 5: 1 sc in each st (15 sc)
Round 6: [sc2tog, 1 sc in next 3] repeat around (12 sc)
Rounds 7-11: 1 sc in each st (12 sc)

Finish off and cut yarn leaving a long tail for sewing

Add a little bit of stuffing to the end (hand area) of the arm

Sew the arms to the sides of the body

Legs

Make 2 with bear color yarn, beginning with magic ring

Round 1: in mr, ch 1, 6 sc (6 sc)
Round 2: 2 sc in each st (12 sc)
Round 3: [2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next st] repeat around (18 sc)
Round 4: 1 sc in each st (18 sc)
Round 5: 1 sc in each st (18 sc)
Round 6: [sc2tog, 1 sc in next 4 sts] repeat around (15 sc)
Rounds 7-11: 1 sc in each st (15 sc)

Finish off and cut yarn leaving a long tail for sewing

Add a little bit of stuffing to the end (foot area) of the leg

Sew the legs to the bottom of the body in a sitting position

Helmet

Helmet

Make 1 with desired color, beginning with magic ring

Round 1: in mr, ch 1, 6 sc (6 sc)
Round 2: 2 sc in each st (12 sc)
Round 3: [2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next st] repeat around (18 sc)
Round 4: [2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next 2 sts] repeat around (24 sc)
Round 5: [2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next 3 sts] repeat around (30 sc)
Round 6: [2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next 4 sts] repeat around (36 sc)

Sew the Stripe to the top of the helmet going down the center from front to back, sew the helmet to the head


Face mask

Make 1 with desired color, beginning with a chain

ch 24
Row 1: turn, sl st in each ch to the end (24 sl st)
Row 2: ch 1, turn, sc in first st, ch 5, sk 5, 1 tr in next st, ch 2, sk 2, 1 tr in next st, ch 4, sk 4, 1 tr in next st, ch 2, sk 2, 1 tr in next st, ch 5, sk 5, 1 sc in last st (18 ch, 4 tr, 2 sc)
Row 3: ch 1, turn, sl st in each st to the end (24 sl st)

Finish off and cut yarn, leaving long tail for sewing 

Sew the face mask to the front corners of the helmet stretching around the front of the face

Sew the ears to the head on top of the helmet

Football

Make 1 with brown, switching to white where indicated, beginning with a magic ring

Round 1: in mr, ch 1, 6 sc (6 sc)
Round 2: [2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next st] repeat around (9 sc)

switch to white yarn

Round 3: [2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next 2 sts] repeat around (12 sc)

switch to brown yarn

Round 4: [2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next 3 sts] repeat around (15 sc)
Round 5: [2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next 2 sts] repeat around (20 sc)
Rounds 6-8: 1 sc in each st (20 sc)
Round 9: [sc2tog, 1 sc in next 2 sts] repeat around (15 sc)

switch to white

Round 10: [sc2tog, 1 sc in next 3 sts] repeat around (12 sc)

switch to brown

Round 11: [sc2tog, 1 sc in next 2 sts] repeat around (9 sc)
Round 12: [sc2tog, 1 sc in next st] repeat around (6 sc)

Finish off, weave opening closed, leaving long tail for sewing 

Stitch the football to the bears hand and/or leg, I tacked it onto both the leg and the arm on the side I put it on
