It is Day 2 of the Happy Harvest Mini Amigururmi Crochet Along and joining the harvest today is a little Smiling Squash.
I know there are different types of squash that are harvested at different times, but when I hear squash I immediately think fall, I think with pumpkins being so associated with fall and being part of the squash family it just gives all squash a very fall vibe to me.
Making a squash was interesting because there are so many varieties of squash, all different shapes and colors, so I had to decided which one I wanted to go with. I decided I wanted to go with sort of a butternut squash shape and color. It might have ended up a little bit more gourd shaped, but I made a couple different versions to figure out what shape I thought looked best and I liked this pattern the best so I stuck with it.
The little squash is rounder and bigger on the bottom and then has a skinnier neck that bulges out slightly toward the top. Then it is finished off with a little stem.
Since squash come in a variety of colors and shapes you have some options with this one, but since I was going for butternut color I used a beige color for mine, Red Heart Super Saver in Buff. I think you could also make it in yellow for a yellow squash, or a dark green color. You could even do yellow with vertical green stripes. For the little stem I used Red Heart Super Saver in Cafe Latte, although if I was making a yellow squash I think I would make the stem dark green.

How to Crochet a Smiling Squash
Finished Size: about 4" tall
You will need:
- medium weight yarn in beige or desired color for squash and brown or green for stem (sample made in Red Heart Super Saver in Buff, and Cafe Latte)
- G crochet hook (4/4.25 mm)
- 2- 6 mm safety eyes
- Polyfil fiberfill
- yarn needle
- stitch markers
- scissors
- black embroidery floss and needle
Instructions:
The squash is made in 2 pieces, the squash and the stem, both start with a magic ring.
Squash
Make 1 with beige yarn (or desired color), beginning with a magic ring
Round 1: in mr, ch 1, 6 sc (6 sc)
Round 2: 2 sc in each st (12 sc)
Round 3: [2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next st] repeat around (18 sc)
Round 4: [2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next 2 sts] repeat (24 sc)
Round 5: [2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next 3 sts] repeat (30 sc)
Rounds 6-10: 1 sc in each st (30 sc)
Insert eyes between rounds 9-10 about 3 sts apart, stitch a mouth below the eyes
Begin stuffing and continue stuffing as you work
Round 11: sc2tog around (15 sc)
Rounds 12-13: 1 sc in each st (15 sc)
Round 14: [2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next 4 sts] repeat (18 sc)
Rounds 15-17: 1 sc in each st (18 sc)
Round 18: [sc2tog, 1 sc in next st] repeat around (12 sc)
Round 19: sc2tog, repeat around (6 sc)
Finish off, weave opening closed and weave in end
Stem
Make 1 with brown yarn (or desired color), beginning with a magic ring
Round 1: in mr, ch 1, 6 sc (6 sc)
Round 2: 1 sc in blo of each st (6 sc)
Cut yarn leaving long tail for sewing
Sew stem to the top of the squash
