Tumnus Scarf

Time for the last project in my week of book inspired crafts. This one is kind of a funny one for me because it is actually not one of my favorite books, but like yesterday's book it is one that has meaning to my family. The book I chose is The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe.

I know this book is a well-loved classic, so don't hate me for saying this isn't a favorite of mine, it still holds a special place for me which is why I chose it. My first introduction to the Narnia series was when I got the whole set for Christmas one year. I was either in 1st of 2nd grade at the time and I loved reading so I was super excited to get this big boxed set. Then I tried reading them and I learned that I was not a fan of fantasy at all. At that age I just could not handle the idea that some kids could walk through a wardrobe into a magical land. It just didn't compute. I was a very literal kid and that was just too far out there for me. I really tried to read them and enjoy them but probably only got through like 1 1/2 books before I couldn't keep going. My older sister loved them though and she read all of them.

Then a few years later when I was in 6th grade my English teacher was trying to get me to read something other than the historical fiction I typically chose. She really wanted me to read something more in the fantasy genre and she suggested I read The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. Again, I tried reading it and I just couldn't handle the fantasy aspect. I just didn't understand why anyone would want to read a book about something so unrealistic. Wardrobes don't really lead to magical worlds, animals don't really talk, it all just didn't make sense to my super literal brain.

I did not read a fantasy book and enjoy it until after I was an adult and married. My husband's favorite genre is fantasy so that is the main thing he reads. He encouraged me to read some and I actually really enjoy it now, but it took a lot of time for me to get to the point where I could get past the unrealistic aspect of fantasy.

The Narnia books are favorites of my husband and when we were expecting our second daughter he really wanted to name her Lucy after the youngest Pevensie sister. He said Lucy was his favorite character because she always had faith and believed, even when the others didn't. I wasn't really on board with the name at first and it took a while to convince me, but eventually I got on board and we got our little Lucy. One day she was looking at one of the Narnia books and she found the name Lucy in the book and she was so excited to have found Lucy, even more so when we told her that was where her name came from.

For my The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe inspired project I chose to make a red scarf like the one Mr. Tumnus wears when Lucy first meets him, a red woolen muffler around his neck. I used bulky weight yarn so it worked up quickly and it uses a simple half double crochet throughout.
