Today is the last day of the Spring 2025 Little Safari Mini Amigururmi Crochet Along, Day 12. I think if you are paying attention to the animals that have been included so far today's animal won't be a big surprise. I think it is one of the first animals many people think of when they think of the African savanna. I don't think you can have a safari themed project without including a giraffe, so for the final animal of the Little Safari Crochet Along is a Little Giraffe.
It is always kind of weird when these crochet alongs come to an end because it goes by super fast and I can hardly believe it is finished, but also it is so crazy and busy that it is a big relief to reach the end. I have really loved this crochet along, I think the little animals have been so fun to make and I have enjoyed seeing the whole set come together.
The giraffe was one of the animals that I 100% knew I needed to include, but probably the one I was most nervous for. The spots on the giraffe seemed a little overwhelming to figure out, but it ended up not being that bad. I made them the same way as the cheetah spots, but larger. It took a couple of different attempts trying to get them to a point I was happy with, but in the end I think the little giraffe turned out pretty cute.
I used the same body style for the giraffe as I did for the Ostrich, the same basic body as the other animals with a couple extra rounds at the neck to give it a longer neck. That makes the giraffe just a little bit taller than some of the other animals.
I used gold and brown for my giraffe, you could also use a tan color for the body with brown spots if you prefer.
I hope you have enjoyed this Little Safari. All 13 patterns (the 12 days plus the bonus day) will be available permanently on my blog, and in an ebook with all of the patterns will be coming soon for anyone who prefers that format. It will be ready in the next couple of days and I will link it here when it is.
How to Crochet a Little Giraffe
Finished Size: about 4" tall sitting, plus horns
You will need:
- medium weight yarn in gold or tan, and brown (sample made in Loops and Threads Impeccable in Gold, and Walnut)
- G crochet hook (4/4.25 mm)
- 2- 6 mm safety eyes
- Polyfil fiberfill
- yarn needle
- stitch markers
- scissors
Instructions:
The body and head are made in one piece, the other pieces are made separately and sewn on. All of the pieces, except the ears, and tail are made beginning with a magic ring (mr).
The spots are made by changing color every few stitches between the brown and gold, to do this carry the yarn inside the piece, no need to cut yarn in between. Also when you change colors you will want to switch to the new color when you pull through the last loop of the stitch prior. For example: work your single crochet in gold as you normally do to start- insert the hook in the stitch, pull up a loop, then rather than doing your yarn over and pull through with the gold yarn switch to the brown yarn, yarn over with brown, pull through both loops on the hook, then repeat that process with the brown yarn switching back to the gold yarn with the yarn over when ready.
In the body pattern I list the color pattern and the stitch pattern, work the stitch pattern following the colors listed, sometimes colors will change in the middle of an increase, a decrease always counts as one stitch.
