Today is Day 11 of the Spring 2025 Little Safari Mini Amigururmi Crochet Along, only one more day to go. So far we have a Lion, an Elephant, a Crocodile, a Cheetah, a Hippo, a Gazelle, a Monkey, a Warthog, an Ostrich, a Cape Buffalo, and a Zebra. There are a couple of pretty notable safari animals missing and one of them is the Rhinoceros, which we will be adding today with the Little Rhino pattern.
The rhino was another obvious animal that I knew I needed to include in this series. The rhinos that live in Africa are the black and white rhinos. I will be honest, I knew that those were the two types of rhinos and I assumed that they were named that because the white rhinos were lighter colored and the black darker. Just in looking up info to make these animals did I learn the names actually have nothing to do with color. The differences between the two have to do with their size and the shape of their mouths. I had no idea. And I don't know what kind of rhino this would be since I didn't really make it detailed enough to show the differences between the two, so it can be whatever kind you want.
I used a lighter gray yarn for my rhino, simply because I had two shades of gray and used the darker gray for the elephant and hippo and wanted to use a different color for the rhino so it wasn't another of the same exact shade. Other than that there is no reason I went with the lighter gray so you can use whatever color you want.
The other thing is that I chose to go with a cream color for the rhino horns, just like I did with the elephant tusks, but they are not really white. They are actually pretty close to the color of the rhino body. But I wanted to have another color in there just to make them stand out more so I decided to go with the cream for contrast. You could make them the same color as the body, or a different shade of gray if you prefer. If I had used the darker gray that I used for the elephant and hippo I probably would have used this lighter gray for the horns for just a little bit of contrast. The colors I chose to use were Pale Gray for the majority of the rhino, and a little bit of Aran for the horns and toes.
Check back tomorrow to see what the final Little Safari animal be!
