I have a little surprise for today! There isn't supposed to be a new Little Safari pattern today but I decided to do a bonus pattern with this crochet along. I wasn't sure if I would be able to make it happen or not so I didn't want to commit to anything ahead of time, but I was able to get everything ready so SURPRISE! there is an extra pattern being released today, so there will be a total of 13 animals in the Little Safari Crochet Along. The bonus pattern is a Little Monkey.
When I was planning this crochet along I had a really hard time narrowing it down to the 12 animals I wanted to include. When I have the idea for a theme I start out by doing kind of a brain dump list of everything I can think of that could fall into that category. I usually have a lot more than the 12 I end up doing. Sometimes I cross things off the list because they are not the best fit, sometimes because I decided it would be too hard to figure out how to make it, sometimes it is too similar to something else, and sometimes just because I have to narrow it down and I want to do something else more than I want to do that thing.
With this one I had narrowed it down to only a couple more than I needed, I asked my family's opinion on which ones I should take off and what I should leave on, and eventually narrowed it down to 13. So I still needed to get rid of one more. One of the animals on my list was a monkey and the more I thought about it I ended up deciding to get rid of the monkey. The reason for this is because in my mind I think of monkeys more as a jungle or rainforest animal, not so much of a savanna or grasslands type of animal. So I took the monkey off and was happy with the 12 animals I had chosen.
That is until I started prepping everything and I was looking up pictures of the animals I was making and reading some stuff about some of them, and I started seeing that one of the animals that is very common to see on a safari is a monkey, because they tend to hang out around picnic areas and can kind of be pests. Now, I have never actually gone on a safari so I don't know this personally, but as I was researching safari animals that kept coming up. There was one specific kind of monkey, the Vervet Monkey, that seemed to be the most common in that area. So I started to regret my decision to get rid of the monkey and decided to try to make a little gray and black vervet monkey if I could find the time.
Vervet monkeys are a light grayish color with black faces so I chose to use the color Putty for my little monkey's body. It is kind of a light grayish beige color that I thought was pretty similar to the color of these monkeys. Then for the face and a few other accent areas I used Dark Charcoal. I like this a little bit better than black because it still gives the look of black but a little less harsh and you can kind of still see the eyes on the monkey.
I hope you enjoy this surprise bonus pattern. Be sure to come back tomorrow to see the actual Day 7 pattern.
