Today starts the second half of the Bewitching Bears Crochet Along, Day 4. Today's little bear is a Little Frankenstein Bear.

I mentioned on Day 1 that this whole thing was inspired by the fact that a few years ago I had made a pumpkin bear and wanted to make another bear to go along with that bear this year, but I had a few different ideas of what kind of bear to make and I couldn't decide which one to go with so I decided to turn it into a crochet along and make six different ones. There were 2 main ideas that I originally couldn't decide between. One was the witch bear that was the bear for day 1, and the other was this Frankenstein Bear that I made for today's little bear.

When I was planning the bears for the crochet along I sketched my designs out in a little notebook and I drew this bear as a little green bear with a purple shirt, like it is. But then I decided it might be easier to just make the body all green and leave the purple off. My youngest son saw the sketch and told me he thought it was really cute. I told him I was going to make it without the shirt and he said "no, the purple shirt is what makes it cute". I still tried making it without the shirt first, and he was right, it is cuter with the purple shirt. So I remade it with the purple shirt.

The bear is made mostly in green yarn, except the purple shirt of course. He also has black hair on top of his head and little gray screws on its neck. The hair uses spike stitches to give it kind of a jagged edge to the hairline. I also planned to add some little stitches to the face but ended up deciding to leave that off. I think it would be cute and add to the Frankenstein effect, but I felt like the face was already getting a little crowded with the muzzle, the ears, and the screws, so I ultimately decided to leave them off. You could absolutely add some little stitches with embroidery floss if you want though.

The finished bear sits about 6" tall sitting, just like the other bears. Also like the others it is made with medium/worsted weight yarn, I used a combination of Red Heart Super Saver and Loops & Threads Impeccable for my Frankenstein Bear, the exact colors are listed in the supplies.

How to Crochet a Little Frankenstein Bear

Finished Size: about 6" tall sitting

You will need:

medium weight yarn in green, black, gray, and purple or desired colors (sample made in Loops and Threads Impeccable in Fern, and Plum, and Red Heart Super Saver in Black and dusty gray)
G crochet hook (4 mm)
2- 8 mm safety eyes
1- 11 mm safety nose
Polyfil fiberfill
yarn needle
stitch markers
scissors

Instructions:

The body and head are made in one piece, the other pieces are made separately and sew on. All pieces are made beginning with a magic ring (mr).

Body/Head

Make 1 starting with green yarn, beginning with a magic ring

Round 1: in mr, ch 1, 6 sc (6 sc)

Round 2: 2 sc in each st (12 sc)

Round 3: [2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next st] repeat around (18 sc)

Round 4: [2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next 2 sts] repeat around (24 sc)

Round 5: [2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next 3 sts] repeat around (30 sc)

Round 6: 1 sc in each st (30 sc)

Round 7: 1 sc in each st (30 sc)

Round 8: 1 sc in each st (30 sc)

Round 9: 1 sc in each st (30 sc)

Switch to purple yarn

Round 10: 1 sc in each st (30 sc)

Round 11: 1 sc in each st (30 sc)

Round 12: 1 sc in each st (30 sc)

Round 13: [sc2tog, 1 sc in next 3 sts] repeat around (24 sc)

Round 14: 1 sc in each st (24 sc)

Round 15: 1 sc in each st (24 sc)

Round 16: sc2tog, repeat around (12 sc)

Begin stuffing body, next round begins the head portion

Switch to green yarn

Round 17: 2 sc in each st (24 sc)

Round 18: [2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next 3 sts] repeat around (30 sc)

Round 19: [2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next 4 sts] repeat around (36 sc)

Round 20: 1 sc in each st (36 sc)

Round 21: 1 sc in each st (36 sc)

Round 22: 1 sc in each st (36 sc)

Round 23: 1 sc in each st (36 sc)

Round 24: 1 sc in each st (36 sc)

Switch to black yarn

Round 25: [1 sc in first st, work 1 sc in the next st in the row below (spike stitch)] repeat around (36 sc, 18 regular, 18 spikes)

Round 26: [sc2tog, 1 sc in next 4 sts] repeat around (30 sc)

Insert eyes between rounds 23 and 24, about 5-6 stitches apart placing them in between spikes, begin stuffing head and continue to stuff as needed as you finish closing up the head

Round 27: [sc2tog, 1 sc in next 3 sts] repeat around (24 sc)

Round 28: [sc2tog, 1 sc in next 2 sts] repeat around (18 sc)

Round 29: [sc2tog, 1 sc in next st] repeat around (12 sc)

Round 30: sc2tog, repeat around (6 sc)

Finish off and cut yarn, use tail to weave around opening to close, weave in end

Muzzle

Make 1 with green yarn, beginning with magic ring

Round 1: in mr, ch 1, 6 sc (6 sc)

Round 2: [3 sc in first st, 1 sc in next 2] repeat (10 sc)

Round 3: [2 sc in each of the next 3 sts, 1 sc in next 2 sts] repeat (16 sc)

Round 4: 1 sc in first 2 sts, 2 sc in each of next 2 sts, 1 sc in next 6 sts, 2 sc in each of next 2 sts, 1 sc in next 4 sts (20 sc)

Round 5: 1 sc in each st (20 sc)

Finish off and cut yarn leaving long tail for sewing

Add safety nose to the muzzle, and embroider a mouth if desired

Sew the muzzle to the face just below the eyes, adding stuffing behind it

Ears

Make 2 with green yarn, beginning with magic ring

Round 1: in mr, ch 1, 6 sc (6 sc)
Round 2: 2 sc in each st (12 sc)

Round 3: [2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next 3] repeat around (15 sc)
Round 4: 1 sc in each st (15 sc)

Finish off and cut yarn leaving long tail for sewing

Set the ears aside to sew on later

Arms

Make 2 starting with green yarn, beginning with magic ring

Round 1: in mr, ch 1, 6 sc (6 sc)
Round 2: 2 sc in each st (12 sc)
Round 3: [2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next 3 sts] repeat around (15 sc)
Round 4: 1 sc in each st (15 sc)
Round 5: 1 sc in each st (15 sc)
Round 6: [sc2tog, 1 sc in next 3] repeat around (12 sc)

Round 7: 1 sc in each st (12 sc)
Round 8: 1 sc in each st (12 sc)

Switch to purple yarn

Round 9: 1 sc in each st (12 sc)
Round 10: 1 sc in each st (12 sc)
Round 11: 1 sc in each st (12 sc)

Finish off and cut yarn leaving a long tail for sewing

Add a little bit of stuffing to the end (hand area) of the arm

Sew the arms to the side of the body

Legs

Make 2 with green yarn, beginning with magic ring

Round 1: in mr, ch 1, 6 sc (6 sc)
Round 2: 2 sc in each st (12 sc)

Round 3: [2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next st] repeat around (18 sc)
Round 4: 1 sc in each st (18 sc)
Round 5: 1 sc in each st (18 sc)
Round 6: [sc2tog, 1 sc in next 4 sts] repeat around (15 sc)
Round 7: 1 sc in each st (15 sc)
Round 8: 1 sc in each st (15 sc)
Round 9: 1 sc in each st (15 sc)
Round 10: 1 sc in each st (15 sc)
Round 11: 1 sc in each st (15 sc)

Finish off and cut yarn leaving a long tail for sewing

Add a little bit of stuffing to the end (foot area) of the leg

Sew the legs to the bottom of the body in a sitting position

Screws

Make 2 in gray yarn, beginning with a magic ring

Round 1: in mr, ch 1, 6 sc (6 sc)
Round 2: 1 sc in each st (6 sc)
