Today is Day 6 of the Summer Cookout Mini Amigururmi Crochet Along which means we are halfway done! The mini amigurumi food that is joining the summer cookout today is a Little Chicken Drumstick.

I wanted to include some kind of meat or "main dish" type of food besides just a hot dog and hamburger, which seemed like the most obvious ones to include to me, but I had kind of a hard time deciding what that should be. I feel like a lot of those main dish type of foods are meat and as I was considering different options some of them felt like they would be hard to crochet in a way that made them recognizable as what they were supposed to be, especially in the small size that I make my mini amigurumi. I ended up landing on a chicken drumstick because it seemed like a shape that could be both easily recreated in crochet form, and also easily recognizable as what it is supposed to be.

Once I decided on a drumstick I still kind of went back and forth a little bit on what exactly I wanted it to look like. A lot of the crocheted versions I had seen had the bone sticking out the bottom, but that isn't necessarily what I first picture when I think of a chicken drumstick so I was on the fence about whether I wanted to make the whole thing brown or have a bone on the end. I ended up going with the bone because I felt like that helped make it more identifiable and broke up the brown a little bit.

Since I decided to make it with the bone I ended up making it in 2 separate pieces that are sewn together. The bone actually inserts into the top section and is sewn in place.

I used a light brown for the chicken part, this is actually the first color that I have used that is not Red Heart Super Saver, instead I used Big Twist Value in the color Camel. I felt like it was the perfect light brown color for the chicken. For the bone I wanted a cream color so I used Red Heart Super Saver in Aran.

We are now done with the first week of the Summer Cookout Crochet Along. Just a reminder that there is no new pattern tomorrow (Sunday), but the last week will start on Monday 6/22/26, so come back Monday for pattern number 7 for the start of the second half of the Summer Cookout.
