We are on Day 5 of the Summer Cookout Mini Amigururmi Crochet Along and I wanted to include some fruits and vegetables in the series and one of the first fruits I think of at a summer cookout is watermelon so for today's mini amigurumi we have a little wedge of watermelon.

I feel like watermelon is a summertime staple, but I actually really don't like it. I don't think I am an overly picky eater but there are a few things I don't like and watermelon is one of the things on that list. My kids are always excited when we have a family get together and someone else brings it because I rarely buy it. But it does seem to be the perfect fruit for a summer cookout, whether it is a big bowl full of cubed watermelon, triangle wedges, or big slices, it always seems to be a big hit.

I decided to make my watermelon in a little triangle wedge. I used green for the rind, bright red for the watermelon, with a little bit of white separating the two. I also added some little seeds with black yarn by stitching on the finished wedge, but you can leave those off if you prefer. I kind of went back and forth on whether or not I wanted to add seeds and ultimately I decided to add them, but I think it looks good either way. I feel like black seeds on the red watermelon is such a classic watermelon look, but so many watermelons that you buy to eat are seedless so the seedless look may actually be more accurate.

To make the watermelon wedge I started with a couple rows of single crochet to make a rectangle shaped base. Then began working around that rectangle in rounds, adding decreases every other round in the red section in order to create the triangle shape.

For my watermelon wedge I used Red Heart Super Saver in the colors Paddy Green, Hot Red, Soft White, and a little bit of black for embroidering the seeds.

Tomorrow will mark the halfway point in the Summer Cookout so be sure to check back tomorrow to see what Day 6 will be!
