It is Day 3 of our visit to the Amazon Rainforest with the Spring 2026 Little Amazon Mini Amigururmi Crochet Along. So far we have a bird- the Mini Macaw, and a mammal- the Little Capybara, and today we have a little reptile joining the group with the Itty Bitty Iguana.

I really went back and forth for a long time on how I wanted to make the Iguana. I really like when I can keep all of the animals made in the same style, with the same body type. But obviously there are some animals that that really just doesn't work for, especially some like fish and insects, but reptiles and amphibians can also fall in that category. I obviously ended up deciding to stick with the same style I had been doing so far. Last year in my Safari crochet along I had the same debate when I made the crocodile and I felt like that worked so I decided to follow a similar pattern for this iguana.

I made the Iguana starting with my basic body pattern, then I made a long, flat, kind of pointed mouth to help give the shape of the iguana's head. I added a little neck flap under the mouth, I made mine orange because looking at pictures sometimes they were an orange or yellowish color, and other times they were closer to the color of the body, but when I tried making it green it all just kind of blended together and I felt like the orange made it stand out a little more. I also added spines down the back in orange. You could also make them in a different shade of green or something like that, again I just thought the pop of orange was a nice contrast and they come in lots of different colors and shades.

I made the little legs with toes by making little picots on the first round of the leg and then when making the second round making sure to work behind the picots to push the toes out and give him little feet. Then he obviously needed a long tail and I made mine striped with a darker green, it is kind of hard to tell in the pictures because there wasn't as much contrast between the greens as I had hoped, but a lot of the pictures I looked at had stripes on the tails and even onto the back.

For my Iguana I used a couple different brands of yarn. I kind of had a hard time finding a shade of green that was what I wanted, and I'm not totally sure I got there but what I ended up with was an olive green for the body, a darker green for the stripes on the tail, and orange for the neck flap and spines. I used Big Twist Value in Olive Drab for the olive green color, Red Heart Super Saver in Medium Thyme for the dark green, and Red Heart Super Saver in Pumpkin for the orange. This is one, like I mentioned earlier, that you could easily switch up the colors. You could use different shades of green or even a tan shade. You could leave the orange out all together and just use the darker green in place of the orange, or the opposite and leave out the dark green and make the tail stripes in orange. Whatever you think looks best, or works with the colors of yarn you have.

Check back tomorrow to see what animal Day 4 in the Little Amazon will bring!

How to Crochet an Itty Bitty Iguana

Finished Size: about 4" tall sitting

You will need:

Instructions:

The body and head are made in one piece, the other pieces are made separately and sew on. Most pieces are made beginning with a magic ring (mr), the beginning of each piece will indicate if it starts with a magic ring or a chain. When making the feet be sure to work behind the picots when working round 2 so that the toes stick out of the foot instead of ending up inside of the leg. The spines are worked by making a string of chains that you will slip stitch in to make each spine.

Embroider a mouth by stitching a line around the center of the piece, I just made two long stitches, 1 from the edge to the center, then another back to the opposite edge

Add a tiny bit of stuffing, enough for it to hold its shape but still stay kind of flat, and sew to the head just below the eyes

Round 1: in mr, ch 1, 6 sc (6 sc)
Round 2: [2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next st] repeat around (9 sc)

Rounds 3-5: 1 sc in each st (6 sc)

Finish off and cut yarn leaving a long tail for sewing

Sew the 2 of the legs/arms to the side of the body just below the head, sew the other 2 to the bottom side of the body in a sitting position

Round 1: in mr, ch 1, 4 sc (4 sc)
