We have made it to Day 8 of the Spring 2026 Little Amazon Mini Amigururmi Crochet Along. Today we are making another unique animal from the Amazon Rainforest. This time it is a Tiny Tapir.
Tapirs are interesting animals, they are kind of funny looking with a short trunk-like snout. They are not the most attractive animals, although I think this little guy is pretty cute. Even though our tapir is a tiny one, they are actually the largest land mammals in the amazon.
The Tiny Tapir has its little trunk, kind of big ears, and a short mane running down the back of the head. Tapirs have toes that are like mini hooves, I think they have 3 or 4 on each foot, so I just added some stitching to each foot to represent their little toes.
When I first started planning my crochet along and sketched out the designs I wanted to make I envisioned making a tapir that was a dark gray or black color with a lighter white section in the middle or bottom of the body. It wasn't until I got ready to make it and looked up pictures to go off of that I learned that that is not what the tapirs that live in the Amazon look like. The black and white tapirs are Malayan Tapirs that live in Southeast Asia. Brazilian Tapirs or Amazonian Tapirs are range from tan to dark brown in color.
I used Loops and Threads Soft Classic in the color Dark Taupe for the main color. I used Red Heart Super Saver in Charcoal as an accent color for the mane and the toes. The mane probably should have just been a darker brown color instead of the charcoal, but I didn't really have a darker shade of brown that looked good with the body color I chose so I went with the charcoal instead. Then for the toes I just decided to stick with the charcoal because I wasn't really sure what color they were supposed to be, in some pictures they look dark and in other pictures they looked like a lighter tan color. So you could use a range of colors, but since I was already using the charcoal I just stuck with that.
Be sure to come back tomorrow to see what Little Amazon animal Day 9 will bring!
